so you really dont think any champs from the old days would be cans in the modern era, get real. the people i have talked to were right, ur blind towards old school fighters and you dont listen to logic, this is a waste of time. The 1970's and 1980's had the best fighters, live with it. Dempsey and johnson had no one in thier era, thats why they had to fight middleweights and light heavies.

Greb fought with only one good eye through most of his career that spanned 299 fights. He was the only man to ever have defeated Gene Tunney (although Tunney beat him about 4 times, as I recall). He lost only about a couple of dozens of his fights; now, that's incredbily lucky.

He was pretty lucky for one with the style shown on the training video, and one wonders how he survived a single round, not to mention beat Mickey Walker, with such a style.

Walker is shown in this video of his fight (in 1932) against the much bigger Max Schmeling who enjoyed a 25 lbs advantage, so many inches in height and reach and was 5 years younger. Walker was mauled. But the left hooks he landed along with other shots could have changed the story of the fight were the odds not all that insurmountable.

Walker is one stubborn fella, as you shall see!

(Sorry, I don't know how to post a video from youtube here on boxingscene. Technoidiot, you see. )

My good ol' buddy kadyo to the rescue! Thanks pal! One learns something new everyday!

As for that Schmeling-Walker match, it's pretty much like putting Juan Diaz against Taylor! 25 lbs. difference!

Thank you for that brilliant and well thought out statement Zerwas1. He fought a long time ago, so he'd lose. Genius.

walker started out as a WELTERWEIGHT, he was undisputed welterweight champ at the age of 21, undisputed middlweight champ after greb died. mickey walker is an all time great. also, u don't see heart like he had, or the chilean tht fought louis - both men getting up all those times. u can see back then winning a title - THE title, becasue there only was ONE for each weight, actually meant something.

the clip of greb "shadowboxing" looks like he was ****ing around, if u look close he's laughing as he's jumping around and stuff. obviously, he though it was a joke, but u can tell a couple things about greb, his hands were fast and he could move like emmanuel augustus - very unorthodox. it would be very hard for anyone to fight someone like that. if i remember, hagler, lost to someone with exactly this style - ever heard of a guy named ray leonard, kids?

also, the greb - walker title fight was described in the newspaper, it's probably even on the internet. anyway, i've actually seen the description of this fight and it said that from rounds 6 on greb really beat walker up

In today's world of boxing, looking cool is as important as winning. Just because a man doesn't conform to modern aesthetic standards does not mean he isn't effective in the ring. Harry Greb proved how far a man with little talent and few skills can go on heart. His fights may have looked uglier than sin, but he came to fight.

                    Yawn.

It's like watching Jack Beckman and Michael Jordan shoot ****ing jumpers.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Jordan would just take his obsolete ass to the hole, or break his ankles and hit the jumper on him.

Just as any science.....boxing has evolved.

Greb's prehistoric ass would have been Merc'd by Hagler in two or three rounds. Hagler was a new schooler with an old school mentality.
