why cant the boxers now hang with the ones from the past?

Dempsey was pretty damn fast compared to the pretty damn overrated Jones. He would hit Jones and he would hurt him bad. Jones is a great fighter but people act likes hes a god in boxing.
Size isn't everything. Look what Dempsey did to Willard.
And correct Southpaw, Marciano would not be a heavyweight. But he, as you said would bulk up, and it would be rather easy for him.Comment

Marciano loved working out and loved eating and could gain muscle like no one's business. The guy weighed over 200 in shape but dieted down and lost muscle to reach a weight he thought was best for a 15 round fight against similary conditioned opponents. Today someone would sit him down and and explain that he could afford to put on some weight, show him the right way to do it without losing speed, and send him gleefully off to the weight room. The guy loved working out and lifted weights early in his career, much to the frustration of his manager and trainer who forbid him from doing it.
The Rock would have no problem weighing a lean 210 lbs with weights. Roy Jones bulked up to a lean 190 lbs no problem and Marciano had a much bigger frame. 210-220 would be no problem at all. Hell the guy had to fight a battle in training just to try to stop from putting on muscle and weighing that much. If he made an effort to do it, he'd have no trouble at all.Comment

I wasnt aware Jones speed was overrated but Dempsey was slow no argument he did not have quick hands or feet Jones would dance circles around him If middleweights cant land a single punch in a round on him I doubt Dempsey wouldComment

Demposey was one of the swiftest heavyweights of hand of foot of all time. He often hit opponents in the act of falling down, and with accuracy too. You basically owned yourself by stating otherwise, I'm afraid.Comment

Boxers years ago fought much more often with much less support for much less money than the pampered boxers today. That being said, no doubt many of today's boxers are just as good as those of yesterday. But could they hang under the circumstances of the old-time fighters, many of whom fought once a month?Comment
-
cuz the boxers today are like little kids: they're babied, they're pampered, they're whiny, arrogant, self-serving, greedy, and soft little punks who fight only for money and nothing else.
fighters from the past had it much rougher than fighters today. they'd usually fight once maybe even twice a month. and they werent babied, they werent greedy. they slogged the hard road all their life and they werent fighting just so they could get a pimped out ride with spinners and covered in bling bling. they had a greater desire to win because they needed to put ****ing food on the table to feed their families and to pay the rent to keep the ****ing roof over their heads.
back then fighters actually wanted a shot at THE TITLE, back in the day when there was only one title per division, and there were only 8 divisions. but today, we have 17 divisions with four major titles per division. thats ****ing 68 MAJOR TITLES IN BOXING TODAY. now titles come along as sort of a perk, a bonus. the main goal of ALL fighters today is to get "the big payday". its disgusting.
fighters today have no respect for others, they love only themselves. we have fighters like floyd mayweather, james toney, fraudley harrison, zab judah, and ricardo mayorga who talk better than they fight and disgrace the sport (its now a business) of boxing with their lack of respect and discipline.
boxing's no longer a sport, its a business. back when we had athletes fighting for the title and not businessmen fighting for big paydays.
muhammad ali would **** the **** out of lennox lewis.
sugar ray robinson would beat phony calzone within an inch of his life.
henry armstrong would destroy jose luis castillo and diego corrales on the same night.
sandy saddler would decimate manny pacquiao without even breaking a sweat.
fighters back then were fighters. boxers today are businessmen.Comment

there are things that are better today (progress on nutrition & training methods, some progress happening bcos of science other just perfectioning of existing techniques through cumulative exeperiences, or more modern technologies - such as videotaping being accessible)
there are things that were better yesterday (talent pool, staying in shape and focused all year round, almost surely training through fighting was a better thing).
I think that drawing conclusions in one direction or the other is more of a "religious" than a logical issue.
Considering the above differences is a must when comparing single fighters from different eras, concluding that the oldtimer should always come out on top is ridiculous.Comment

Ive watched actual footage of Dempsey compare that to Roy Jones and if you think its comparable in the slightest get a gun and shoot yourself because you are a ******. One of the swiftest of all-time huh? Ali,Patterson,Tyson,RJJ thats fast hands Dempsey is so far down on the list as far as being one of the swiftest of all times its crazy. Thats just naming heavyweights 95% of the people Roy fought had faster hands than DempseyComment
