i gotta say i'm still kind of a newbie when it comes to boxing history. i dont know much about past boxers but from what i see i dont understand why their considered so much greater than the boxers now. i mean dont you people think boxing has evolved over the years? its just natural for things to evolve and people to get better over time. do you guys think that since (i'm assuming) most of you guys have been boxing fans since you were young and grew up idolizing guys like sugar ray robinson and ali that your just biased to the boxers now? i mean like i said i'm still a new fan and when i watch boxing from like since sugar ray leonards time until now i'm more impressed with that era than the boxers way before. just my thoughts.

Because Sugar Ray Leonard fought in one of the toughest era's of all time.

        Hagler, Duran, Hearns, Benitez.

And that's just the fighters that are ON his resume.

Indeed, they are bigger, slower, less active, money grabbing, roided up, jab un clinch style fighters with personalities as deep as a coffee mug. amazing.

nah Lewis is too big, strong and skilled for Dempsey. But I'd still pick Dempsey as the better fighter - certainly more entertaining than Lenny.

yes i agree they are less active and money grabbing. i dont know about less personality i just think boxing is less talked about and they get less exposure now. but i'm talking about skill level. people talk about sugar ray robinson like hes god. for example the pbf baldomir fight. it really pissed me off. then they said their will never be anyone like him ever. its like no matter how good you are you'll never be considered that great just because. another guy is caesar chavez in my opinion i think oscar is clearly better but will never get that respect.

In ALL sports, many hold that soft spot for atheletes who either began it all or who happened to be in a time where certain politics didn't matter as much...

as far as actual talent, I don't think the fighters of the past were any better...however I think at those times, they may have been a lot hungrier..

in most sports these days, athletes know they can just sign a contract for 50mil over 5 years...back then that was practically unheard of any many worked harder to earn...

so in terms of talent, I think a lot today are just as good if not better...but many lack that drive

if there were guys like Ali around today then the sport would get a lot more exposure. It's sad to say but Tyson is still the face of boxing. I asked a few people I know to tell me who the heavyweight champ of the world was. most of them said Tyson, a few hadden't a clue and 1 guy said Lennox Lewis (who I suppose is still the last universal champ)

I think the fact that Toney can hang in the top 10 heavyweights shows how bad the division is. I can't envision a fat middleweight being a contender in the heavyweight division during the 60's 70's 80's or even the 90's.

It's just that the aren't many classic exciting fights anymore. There are some that will be rememberd but only in the lower weights. If it weren't for todays welters and middles I would possibly lose all interest in todays sport. The middleweights and lower produce the most exciting fights these days. I honestly don't think todays heavies have the heart, fitness or drive to produce anymore thrilla's in manilla's.
