          I say Jack Dempsey, not because he as the one who invented or perfected
          modern" boxing techniques, but because he was so famous and idolized that
          many people took notice. It's a vast chasm between Jack Johnson's grab, hold and
          waltz method and Dempsey's straight ahead "I'm coming to kill you" style.

              From watching fight films dempsey and tunney were the first heavy champs that looked and moved like modern boxers. The ones before still had this upright lead and clinch thing going on.

                I would pick Dempsey too.

                But to be fair, some of his great contemporaries, like Greb, and some even older great fighters, like Gans and Barbados Joe Walcott are hard to evaluate by modern standards due to scarce/lacking fight footage.
