The consensus opinion in another thread was that Mayweather had a substantially better resume than Jack Dempsey.

What about punches with most snap? Who does that go to? Tyson? Julian Jackson perhaps?

Interesting list - all are 'Consistently Consensus' (I don't get the RJJ one.)

How bout another ten that are 'Consistently Consensus' but this time they are all wrong (are urban legends)? **

          1. The Supreme Court found Muhammad Ali not guilty of draft evasion.
          2. Primo Carnera was an oaf who couldn't box.
          3. Sonny Liston was a thug.
          4. Rubin Carter was framed.
          5. Floyd Patterson was an easy knock-out.
          6. Rocky Marciano was a nice guy.
          7. Jack Johnson laid down in Havana.
          8. It was over 100 degrees in Havana.
          9. In Toledo, Jack Dempsey's gloves were loaded.
          10. Gentleman Jim Corbett came out of the upper class.

** Believed by casual fans not us.

Sorry, but I can't let his "Floyd is a cherrypicker" agenda go unchallenged.

1-No but he had to go to the US Supreme Court to get reinstated to box

6-Depends on who is asked. Some friends of his and family seemed to think so. Just not people he did business with.

As for the Rubin Carter thing, when I read about what really happened, I couldn't believe how horribly fabricated that Hurricane movie was. Either tell a mostly honest movie or don't even bother. There's a great youtube channel called History Buffs where this guy researches the validity or biopics and tells you what scenes are and aren't true, based on research and people's real accounts. The most accurate I've heard of so far was Goodfellas, which seems to be at least 90% true. Except that the real Henry Hill wasn't as tough as portrayed in the movie and wanted out of the gangster life after the first major heist of Air France and opening his own night club.

5-Floyd Patterson was only an easy knockout for Sonny Liston.

Speaking of urban legends, your namesake Willie Pep has one attached to him about winning a round without throwing a punch. The funny thing is that Oscar De La Hoya actually DID win a round without throwing a punch against Felix Trinidad on one of the judges' scorecards in the 12th and final round. They mention it in the Legendary Nights episode having to do with that fight. Crazy stuff huh? So whose to say a judge might not have maybe given Pep a round where he didn't throw a punch? I mean, probably not, but that proves it's possible if a judge is inept enough or paid off.

Mayweather was TOP cherry picker ever. Allow me to explain why.

First of all, talent wise. No other talent so gifted has been such an inveterate cherry picker and dodger.

He walked the line and grudgingly fought some half decent fighters along the way, usually a bit past their best, so this gives him some accomplishments away from the cherry tree.

Relative to money made, no other cherry picker ever came close to MW's success.

Fool's can debate his greatness as a boxer, for he was merely the Meadowlark Lemon of boxing, who fought exhibition type bouts and got them sanctioned as actual fights by crooked ABC outfits. But as a cherry picker lil' Floyd was peerless. He was also a peerless sponge who absorbed much of his technique from Pep and Locche before him.

I give MW credit for a full medicine bag of traditional technique. His medicine bag was much fuller than other negro super talents like Jones, Ali and even Leonard, who loved to rely on superior athleticism and inventiveness.

That can't be, as Jack Dempsey was a gifted talent yet his resume is much worse than Mayweather's. As many of us in this forum have already agreed.

That tells me that Dempsey was more of a cherry picker and his career more carefully managed.
