I mean, we can go through many champions records and find fault. Holmes, Tyson's, Dempsey's, Listons, Joshua's, Wilders even a prime Ali. Wlad was 9 years older than Charles was in 1954 when Wlad fought AJ. If Wilder and AJ fight this year, Wilder will be the same age now in 2018 that Charles was in 54.
Now I accept that Marciano's major opponents weren't in the prime of their abilities but on the other hand, they weren't just completely washed up either. There is some middle ground here. It's a false dichotomy to say either a fighter is in his prime or he's washed up as if there's no other option.
And, while people like to nitpick Marciano, his fellow champions thought very highly of him. I've read quotes from Liston, Foreman, Frazier and Ali praising Marciano. Frazier stated that the only two people he could see beating him at his absolute best was Louis and Marciano. Ali said that at his best, he think he would have beaten Marciano, but it would have been a difficult fight in which he believes he would have been tested. And Ali wasn't shy about saying he could have beaten anyone. So I believe he was sincere and saying what he really felt when he said that. Ringside, Ali was a guest commentator for the Chuvalo/Patterson fight and during the fight, unprompted, he made a comment about Marciano being "his idol". And keep in mind, this was in 1965 when Ali was a member of the militant Nation of Islam.
