Roy absolutely ducked Michael Nunn, who was his mandatory contender. The WBC saved him which almost caused that organization to go out of business after losing a lawsuit related to that.
Personally, I don't think he ducked him. Not out of fear anyway.
In early 97, before Roy had fought Griffin in a rematch, he spoke of a potential fight at HW afterwards. Then in his post fight interview after the rematch, he again expressed his interest in having a huge HW fight against the likes of Evander Holyfield. But directly after the fight, nothing came of it. Then Nunn became his mandatory. And although he was faded at that point, he was still a big threat. I think Roy saw it as a high risk, low reward fight. They had brief negotiations, but the fight wasn't paying as high as some of Roy's previous fights. So after offering Nunn a small purse, it ended up going to purse bids which Goosen won. It meant that Roy would have been paid around $1.8m.
After giving it some thought, he decided to relinquish the belt and target a big money fight at HW instead. Which is why he went to Atlanta with his advisor, Greg Fritz, to meet up with Evander and his attorney, Jim Thomas. And after Evander had respectfully turned down the idea of it due to being in what he saw as a no-win situation, Roy ended up signing to fight 'Buster' Douglas instead for around $6m. As we know, Roy's father then stepped in at the last moment to block that fight, which left Roy in limbo. Then after Nunn and Roch had signed to fight each other for the vacant WBC title that Roy had relinquished, Roy ended up fighting Virgill Hill at a CW, for around $4m.
In my honest opinion, I think Roy would have fought Nunn for a big payday. I would say that he dismissed him rather than ducked him. If you don't agree, that's fair enough. But I find it hard to believe that Roy ducked him out of a fear of losing to him, when he'd tried to fight Liles in 96, and he'd pursued Evander. That simply doesn't make sense to me. It's illogical. A guy who feared a faded Nunn, wouldn't try and fight those other guys instead.
Regarding the WBC, I think it was absolutely outrageous that they handed Roy his title back, and I'm glad that Roch took them to court and sued them for millions.Last edited by robertzimmerman; 01-21-2016, 04:38 PM.

You look at Sosa and you think "this guy looks so poor and flawed" yet he found a way to do well in fights.
Toney dropped him quite bad in their fight but Sosa rallied late and did well after dropping most of the first 6.

Off topic: Are you any relation to Bob Dylan?

I wish I was related to Bob. I'm just a huge fan of his.

He can punch, but hes not a really strong puncher
Defensively mea, he gets rattled
Good fighter though and good to bring up regarding Joe as I am sure some would disagree with me.

Wow! What a statement that is.
The fans grew frustrated, because he was making decent fighters look like nobodies, and they hated seeing him toy with subpar mandatories. However, I've produced evidence that he tried to make fights with the likes of Liles and Hopkins etc, and after he'd unified at LHW, he had mandatory obligations from three organisations. So what was he meant to do? When fights couldn't be made against the likes of Dariusz and Hopkins, he had to take other voluntaries before fighting guys like Kelly and Woods. You bring up guys like Calzaghe, and look what he was doing. He was more than content to stay at home and repeatedly defend a lightly regarded belt, until the last few years of his career. He had no intentions of fighting Roy.
Yes, what an incredible statement that the champion who threw the fewest punches in memory could be boring. Isn't that something? What is it you found so exciting about him, bub, his stomach muscles?
Had to, had to, had to. That is your blind perspective. He had to take those mandatories. He couldn't say screw you A B C's, could he now? He kept so many belts because it made for easy mandatory opposition. Same thing Calzaghe did.
Sugar Ali is exactly right. Jones took one big fight in his career. Old Hill, old McCallum, small, neck-broken Pazienza, some shoe clerks and dish washers, and some washed up junior middles ten years past their best and fighting as light heavies.
You have not proven anything to me except you have an agenda to promte Jones. You never got over his muscles and his speed.
Listen, friend, over at nonstop boxing you could find some pals, I am sure of it. Why don't you try them over there? Good luck.Last edited by The Old LefHook; 01-23-2016, 12:03 AM.
