Yes I remember going to a bar to watch the fight and a friend of mine who was in awe of Mike actually asked me if tyson would lose and my reply was mcnelly never fought before more than 300 people.

Holmes was a cash grab, but wasn't mike fresh out of opponents then as he had just beaten all the top guys from 86-87... I don't know who else you could have had him fight in early 88... Maybe Tim Witherspoon or dokes, but guys like ruddock and evander weren't established contenders yet..
But it did suck for larry to only have a 4 weeks notice..
Yeah I guess you could make that point. But 38 year old Holmes two years out after a loss doesn't seem appealing to me outside of his name.

That fight was very close to happening. It was signed and ready to go. But weeks before it happened Foreman pulled out because the promoter couldn't come up with the money by the deadline. It was supposed to be fought on or near Foreman's 50th birthday.

Out of all the cash grabs I would have paid to see that one.

I almost stopped watching boxing after sitting through Jones-Hopkins 2.

It really was that bad. The ugliest and least entertaining fight that I've ever seen future hall of famers engage in. Well unless Curtis Stevens and Andre Dirrell make the HOF.

Yeah, I would have paid to see it... I think larry gives george the business behind the jab for a decision win..

One of the worst fights ever.. Totally unwatchable... And from what I have been told, hopkins took a million or so upfront with a small PPv upside, and roy took nearly nothing but got a huge slice of PPv upside... The fight bombed and roy walked away with like 25k

I'd say two fights too many. And so has Ray, for that matter.

Yeah and it was Peter who ended up in that "cocoon of horror."

Funny thing is, a lot of people have also said that about their first fight but their second far surpassed it in suckiness.
