How does one conclude that Rickard wasn't involved in '26?
Hell, if Rickard wasn't involved Dempsey may have had no choice but to take the Chicago deal.
If you mean in the sense that he stole Dempsey away for a fight with Tunney for less money after Dempsey ducked the Chicago deal, then ok.

Arcel watched Dempsey live from ringside starting in 1916. He lived during that era intimately involved in the sport. Typically considered boxing’s greatest trainer. When he says Wills was a “good Journeyman” who was “none too fast” his comments come with a level of knowledge no one today comes close to. Certainly not you who has not gotten the Ali era straightened out in your mind.

I'm sure many people were of the opinion that Foreman was going to destroy Ali. Didn't turn out that way. But at least they fought.

Maybe if Wills were actually a good fighter and not a scumbag he would've gotten a shot?
