I think most wouldn't consider Ali the heavyweight champion at that time. At least I don't see it that way.
Lineal is fine, but the truth is that nobody could seriously percieve Ali to be the heavyweight champion in that fight.
I think most people DID find Ali to be champion. At the time of the Holmes - Norton fight, Leon Spinks was champ. He was stripped of the WBC trinket because he opted for a return against Ali rather than defending against mando Holmes.
I'm sure you were aware of that though Joseph, but perhaps your rememberence of the timeframe is a little off?

I'm not dis*****g the lineage. I'm only stating my belief that most people wouldn't view the Holmes-Ali fight as the day Holmes won the heavyweight championship.
At the very least I don't think that's how people saw that fight and the common belief is that Holmes became champion in the Norton fight.
Honestly, I really don't keep up with lineal champions because it's too convoluted and really not relevant anymore in my opinion.

Personally, I don't get too caught up in title lineages. But I can say with confidence that after Holmes beat Norton, he was widely considered the best heavyweight in the world. If Ali didn't make an ill advised comeback against Holmes, I'm sure eventually Holmes would have been recognized as the undisputed champion.

I agree Larry and Kens fight for the wbc title involved the two best hw's at the time. It turned out to be an epic fight.
I did not want to discuss this question because of the spoiler.
I will say this: does anybody know that Wladimir won the lineal title by beating Chagaev? Most people do not know it and most people do not care about it because it is meaningless somehow. Of course you have your point but personally I do not think it is so important to think about the lineal title that much. I will not talk about that question because I do not want to spoil it.
By the way in question 4 I missed one word.
no, he did not. he won the ring title, he did not resume true lineage.
a vacated lineal crown can only be contested by the number 1 and 2 contenders. chagaev was ranked number 3.
