I'm not quite so convinced about great competition. I'm honestly not dismissing De La Hoya, I even said he might be in my top 20 but I think you have too much bias for the more recent fighters, perhaps you think my bias goes the opposite way.

Anyway this is my last post of the night, i'll comment further tomorrow should you respond.
Bias for newer fighters? The newest guy I have in my top 25 is probably Whitaker if I sat down and thought it through.

Prime Armstrong was at his best at 135. He wouldn't destroy Delahoya at 135. Armstrong took a LOT of guys to a decision especially at 135 and 147.

He wore a lot of guys out, and even Prime Pacquiao needed a bajillion punches against a shot Oscar before he finally just quit on his stool. Against prime Oscar? Armstrong would probably win. Destroying? Nope.

Funny, I rate 1 modern fighter in my top welterweight list but I have a bias for the modern fighters and against the old guys.

No one ever destroyed De La Hoya during his whole career......except for Pacquiao. And that happened when Oscar was old and weight drained.

So I don't see Basilio being able to pull it off.

And incidentally, some of the other names you guys have mentioned I acknowledge as being better than ODLH and you have won me over to your side about him not being top 10. But I just don't see what made Basilio so great?

A LOT of crazy opinions being thrown around here.

De La Hoya is clearly not a top 10 Welterweight. There have already been at least 15 fighters mentioned that are greater (and yes, one of them is Basilio).

I would pick Carmen to beat Oscar. I think he is just a little better everywhere. A better chin(Carmen always gets left out on the "best chin ever" discussion.),better cardio,a little faster,an excellent work rate, and a boat load of toughness.

I am a huge Oscar fan BTW. I am biased towards the old school fighters though.

Basilio is clearly not a top 10 welter either.

Griffith, Napoles, Robinson, Walker, Britton, Lewis, Leonard, Armstrong, Walker, Hearns, Ross all take it over Basilio, Delahoya, Trinidad, etc.

Theres a few fellows in the past that weren't champions that could give Oscar everything he wants and more!!! I like Oscars style and his skills but he was not a more than willing type of guy in my opinion!! His conditioning wasn't superb and he was willing to coast at times and he lost momentum and rounds that way!! He could be in the top forty but no where near the top twenty five!

I think I agree with you on the fact that Basilio isn't top 10 material. I do think he could make the top 15 and is better than De La Hoya, however.

That's fair enough. But for posters to say he would destroy Delahoya is just madness.

to complain about the fight with Tito is a joke you could make the same case he lost to a Coked out undertrained over the hill whitaker

who was past it no matter what you say when he won a title at 154 against Julio Ceasar Vasquez he took a big chance and got lucky the rivera fights show clearly he was no longer what he was VS JCC Cardona MCgirt
and he was not at 147 when he beat JCC himself 140 if I remember right
