At the time it didn't seem like a good match to me. Pryor was fighting guys like Dujuan Johnson and Akio Kameda(both floored him) and Leonard was fighting guys like Duran, Hearns and Benitez. Remember, Pryor was exciting but wasn't as big til he beat Arguello. Leonard was already retired with a detached retina before that.

tbear hit the nail on the head right there, only after pryor beat arguello, might pryor had been able to get a decent split with the money for a fight with leonard but leonard was out with the eye thing and I think after the second arguelo fight pryorwent down on freebase. the fight just wasn't to be. but if it coulda happened in like 80 or 81, it woulda been interesting if only from the sparring stories, tho we have a poster here who has seen an unremarkable sparring session between the two so we'll never know

More than I wanted to see Pryor-Leonard at the time I wanted to see Pryor-Mamby. Saoul wasn't the most exciting guy but he was great technician who was tough as hell and also had held the WBC crown for a while. It was a natural matchup....that didn't happen.

I am from CIncinnati & I saw every single Pryor fight in person, most were in Cinci, but he had a few out of town, for which I traveled to, I also saw about half his amateur fights, so of course, I was a Pryor fan, but after watching all those fights, I knew his limitations as well as anyone, & I knew Arguello would beat him, but due to something he was on & we will never know what, he was able to win & cheat Arguello, Pryor was hit with one of the hardest right hands I've ever seen, it bent his head straight back & he acted like it was nothing, & I"ve seen bums put Pryor down in previous fights, so he could be hit & hurt, Lewis gave him something that helped him, also when the fight ended, Pryor staggered over to the ropes & learned over towards reporters right in front of where we sat, & answered a few questions, before his people whisked him away, his speech was slurred, you could not understand any of his answers, he acted not like a tired or winded fighter, but someone that was drunk or high on something, believe me, he was not feeling anything at that point, I believe they gave him something & he cheated Arguello, by the time they fought their 2nd fight, Arguellos heart was gone, he knew he couldnt beat Pryor & after that fight, Pryor was done, due to drugs & I think his trainer Lewis contributed to that by giving him some kind of drugs, could he have gone on to beat Leonard, no way, he had to take something just to beat Arguello, could he have beaten Hearns, no way, when they fought in the Amateurs, Pryor was very close to being Phsically fully mature, Hearns looked like a little skinny kid, he matured much later, of all the fights possible, I would love for Duran to have stopped in this Division & fought Pryor, he would have won, Cervantes even put Pryor down & almost out, & he was past his prime, he would have had a chance to beat Pryor in his Prime maybe, who knows, I would also have loved to have seen him fought Mancini, he would have destroyed Mancini but it would have been a war until it ended.

Also there was a Deal to fight Leonard but Pryor was the one avoiding him,& his people, they wanted all they could get from Pryor before the biggest fights, but the drugs got him 1st, they ruined Pryor & took advantage of him, I think after fighting either of the big 3 at the time, Duran, Hearns or Leonard, he would have lost against any of the them, there probably would not have been more, since the 1st one would have beaten him, but he had all the options after the 2nd Arguello fight, he could have challenged Mancini for an all Ohio fight, it was have been popular, he could have challenged Bramble, & beaten him, also, Howard Davis Jr. would have been a decent money fight, then challenged Duran, either way, he had the boxing world at his feet after the Arguello fights, but Lewis & others ruined him, they took all they could get & left him walking the streets of Cincinnati without money or a job for many years after.

Pryor beat Arguello. He may have taken a stimulant in the first fight, but he beat him fair and square in the second fight, with no tainted bottle, proving the first fight was no fluke. Pryor didn't need whatever was in that bottle to beat Arguello.
