There are many Calzaghe fights that went this way. There is a compilation video on youtube showing a lot of them.

I think the ref protected Ruddock from more unnecessary damage. After that last left hand you could see Ruddocks head snap back and his hands went down. His legs were shot as he fell backwards into the ropes. It is my belief, and obviously that of the ref, that once ruddock had hit the ropes, Mike was going to do a lot more damage. But I guess we'll never know. I wouldn't call it bad though.

But the round was over, the warning light went on, Taylor wouldn't have taken any more shots and that's why I will always think that was a bad stoppage and nobody could ever convince me otherwise.

It is a matter if opinion but Richard Steele might have spent too much time reading Tyson's resume before deciding it was over.

the ref isn't supposed to take the timing of the round into consideration when deciding whether or not a fighter is fit to continue.

              Tommy Morrison vs Michael Bentt...
Proof it was stopped to early, after all that beating to the head it still never knocked enough sense into Morrison's thick branded skull that using ketamine, mdma and so on wasn't a good idea.

No particular fight immediately comes to mind, but there is this slender African-American referee (whose name escapes at the moment) that's in the habit of stopping fights prematurely. If a fighter takes about 5 unanswered punches with his back against the ropes, he intervenes.

and last week Ivan Pozo vs Xavi Urpi was terrible

He should. But Taylor didn't respond, so now not that bad a stoppage. It seemed like if Taylor said he could continue, Steele might have let it go. Taylor was so close though, you gotta feel kinda bad for the guy, not getting that career defining win.

At that point in the fight, under the context of when it was and all the commotion, it wasn't unreasonable for Taylor to not respond like a soldier.

But then again, I'm of the belief that the referee should be aware and consider what point of the fight they are in. Most of them do but won't admit it.
