His legs were shot as he fell backwards into the ropes. It is my belief, and obviously that of the ref, that once ruddock had hit the ropes, Mike was going to do a lot more damage. But I guess we'll never know. I wouldn't call it bad though.

the ref isn't supposed to take the timing of the round into consideration when deciding whether or not a fighter is fit to continue.

Tommy Morrison vs Michael Bentt...
Proof it was stopped to early, after all that beating to the head it still never knocked enough sense into Morrison's thick branded skull that using ketamine, mdma and so on wasn't a good idea.

No particular fight immediately comes to mind, but there is this slender African-American referee (whose name escapes at the moment) that's in the habit of stopping fights prematurely. If a fighter takes about 5 unanswered punches with his back against the ropes, he intervenes.

At that point in the fight, under the context of when it was and all the commotion, it wasn't unreasonable for Taylor to not respond like a soldier.
But then again, I'm of the belief that the referee should be aware and consider what point of the fight they are in. Most of them do but won't admit it.
