  • Joe Louis vs Larry Holmes

I have a high opinion of Holmes but I think he'd get knocked out.
I think he'd box well but at some point or another I see him getting put to sleep.

I agree with you, Louis would get to him eventually

The "size" argument does not work when it comes to Louis because he was a very special fighter. He would drop Holmes on his way to an unanimous decision.

I can't believe how many voted Holmes. The guy is imo one of the most overhyped fighters in history. Don't get me wrong, he could box, but he was all about his jab and had plenty boring fights.

I see Louis having a lot of trouble matching Holmes' jab and speed of hand and foot.

Holmes might frustrate Louis with his movement and handspeed but Louis only needs one good shot. If he can land it, he can either stop the fight there or hurt you bad enough so he can get you out of there. I'd pick Louis by KO.

Holmes is a bit overated IMO. but I have a hard time picking Louis in fights because he simply never fought anyone like Holmes or as good. Louis had next to 0 movement and his oponents never gave him a reason to learn how to do so.

Holmes is 6'4 with an 81 reach and probably the fastest HW jab to date. When Louis fought a shorter craftier guy like even Walcott, you can see the problems that occur when they don't just stand in front of him and **** away. Not saying the fight would be one sided, but I see Louis taking a lot of hard right hands coming in, probably losing a decision. Anything Louis lands I feel Holmes could weather, he had a good chin.

Louis didn't have "next to 0" movement, he knew how to cut off the ring and how to get punching angles, also Homes might be quick bigger target for Louis than Conn or Walcott was, Louis fixed his susceptibility to a right hand after his fight with Schmeling, and some even doubted that was true in the fist place like Harry Wills “Joe didn’t look like he was in the pink of condition in that fight. He didn’t look like he was positive in his punches. Joe showed me, both in training and fighting that he was capable of getting away from a right. He is no sucker for a right.”

Louis was also a master at parrying jabs, and if Renaldo Snipes could drop Holmes then Louis could definetly do it too, except he hits much harder and is famed for his finishing ability.

Any flaw Louis had in dropping his left after the jab was corrected following the Schmeling loss. Prior to Schmeling, Louis was winning so easily nobody thought to tinker with the formula.

I would go so far as to say Holmes gets UNDERRATED by more than a fair few around here. Still, I got Louis here. No cakewalk for Joe and I figure Holmes will win some rounds on his jab alone but Louis generates a good volume of precision offense and over the course of 15 rounds that's going to tell on the scorecards. No KO as Holmes' chin is too good so call it Louis UD in a very competitive, very good fight.
