Duran gave up in the biggest fight of his career because of a stomach ache. Literally. He would get KTFO by Pacquiao and Valero.

      Pernell for sure, maybe Leonard.

In the biggest fight of his career Duran beat SRL in Montreal. Pac beat Davis Diaz and Valero beat his wife. Its not even comparable.

Marquez is one of the greatest lightweights I have ever seen and while he may not be higher on most ATG lists because of resume, I believe he is a better fighter than Duran and I would favor him to beat Duran had they ever met on their best night. For you to disregard him completely shows you don't appreciate how great Marquez is.

I have never bought into the notion that Duran is some unbeatable God at lightweight.

I hate to laugh at this because of the last part but that was good...

I agree with you when you say there is a quarter out there which over-rates Duran (or perhaps under-rates the other LW legends?), & it is a bit heavy-handed, so I understand your point there, mate.

Having said that, if this match could somehow be made, I would take your betting money on Marquez to defeat Duran in a heart-beat, & not look back. I cannot possibly see Marquez besting Duran, to be honest. As a LW, Marquez is marginally better than the likes of Ken Buchanan, as well as possessing similarities in both attributes & style...Duran ran him over like a truck. The moderate weaknesses Marquez has shown in his 135lb. contests would be massively magnified against someone like Duran.

He was bigger, he was better, he was younger, it was his weightclass. Duran beats Marquez hands down --- & in a 15-rounder, he certainly wins inside the distance.

Again, not a jot of disrespect to Marquez --- his brother is my favourite current fighter on the planet --- but he is not the fighter he was at Featherweight, & even that man wasn't the 126lb. equivalent of Duran's greatness.

Ive heard Mayweather mentioned,he was a very very good fighter at 135 but putting him in with Duran would be like putting a chihuahua in with a pitbull, imo

the chances of Marquez beating Duran at Lightweight is in the negatives.

an old Barrera is probably the closest thing to Duran that Marquez fought, and Marquez went through hell to beat him. I think Durans counter right hand would end up flattening Marquez, who actually isnt that hard to hit, especially at lightweight where an old Casamayor hit him plenty and Juan Diaz also was also to tag him repeatedly.

guys like Leonard, Williams, Whitaker...these are definitely up to debate. but Marquez would get toasted.

Au contraire, friend. I do everything in my power to overrate Marquez. I've been scrambling to put together a way to put him over Pacquiao for a while now. But Duran would be bigger and stronger, and would clinch and smother Marquez, suppressing those beautiful combinations. I don't think he'd stop Marquez, but he'd knock him down and bully him inside...

Pernell Whitaker is the choice I would be most comfortable with.
