With these fantasy match ups re boxing knowledge training etc I think you have to assume that were the fight today Marciano would have the benefit of any advances and likewise if the fight were in the 50's Tyson has to take what he's given then otherwise they don't really work.
Bit like debating who is the best racing car driver out of Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher but not allowing Fangio a modern car?

What sort of advances are there in boxing training though? Aside from the obvious steroids and supplements.
Boxers have always trained in similar ways using the same sort of equipment and Marciano possibly trained the hardest out of any heavyweight. Attitudes have changed though, heavies now like to bulk up whereas they used to like to cut weight for increased stamina (which I believe Marciano used to)
The only difference a modern training routine would do for Marciano would be to bulk him up which I don't think would do him many favours.

Tyson takes the fight for me though. He was just on another level.

I agree boxers train pretty much as they always have done I was more making the point that you cannot do these match ups in a vacuum and have to find a level playing field.
Factors such as referees pretty much let fighters carry on with bad cuts and had a more ******* allowance regarding the rules certainly favoured Marciano in that era. Nowadays he would have been stopped against Charles, possibly even Walcott and disqualified against ****ell.
Fighters used to train for 45 round fights wheras now its 12, same day weigh ins, gloves etc etc. If you don't factor in these things it is pointless trying to compare say Battling Nelson and PBF.

        • I realize this thread is very old BUT i want to state my opinion for anyone who cares to read it.
Now in my opinion Tyson has this fight firstly Mike had TREMENDOUS power which is why he was a one punch KO artist maybe Rocky couldve survived the first few but lets face after several he wouldve been knocked out. Now some may say that Rocky had a granite chin ok granted BUT so did alot of fighters Iron faced and he knocked him all out. Rocky had little to no head movement and he would keep on coming and he wouldve traded shots with Mike. Heres were things heat up, people say Tyson had no heart. Im here to say that your all ******. For Christ sakes he stood in the ring with legends and got nailed pretty hard even in his prime and he prevailed because of his amzing skills and *ding ding* his heart in the ring he was the number one contender even after the Buster fight. He is a Hall of Famer and was the youngest heavyweight champ of all time he is a legend. You cant just fake that. Someone on this same thread stated that Tyson hated when fighters came for HIM which is plain dumb because close encounters trading shots were all in his hunting grounds thats why he was so good with head movement.Taking their weights into consideration basically it wouldnt really acount to the fight itself. Basically. But it would be to Tysons advantege cause he can either push Marciano back to place a good combo or tie him up easily to rest if needed. Also who the **** said that Tyson had no stamina?? Hes lasted the whole 12 rounds with amazing fighters that wouldnt go down with his punches he took and returned tremendous power punches from big names. He had no heart? He fought with a broken back, a busted knee mental issues and not once did he use those things as excuses for his losses nor did he discredit the fighters he lost to. People get off with saying that just because of his last fight and his mediocre preformance. Everyone undermines him too much you think he isnt on the level of greats such as Ali, Frazier, Foreman and YES HE WAS Ali himself stated that Tyson would become a legend he was there with Tyson when he beat the soul out of Berbick. During Foremans comeback Foreman decided he was ready to take on Tyson. Ring a bell? He decided he was READY to do so. Foreman acknowledged Tyson's amazing skills in the ring so thats why he stated he felt ready to take him on. Tyson was an amzing fighter and in his prime he wouldve taken care of Rocky just cause he went undefeated does not mean he was undefeatable Tyson also went undefeated. So all in all in my opinion of course Tyson would knock out Marciano.

          • mike by early tko imo. he does a foreman-frazier on him

marciano went down to much lesser punchers than tyson. too much heart and too little defense for his own good

            • I think it'd be a ****in war like Hearns/Hagler except with multiple early knockdowns on each end coming from each fighter but it wouldnt go past 3 or 4 with Tyson taking him out eventually.

              • Honestly could not see Tyson winning this one. Marciano's far superior conditioning, heart, and power that was on par with Tyson's would be something Tyson never was prepared for. Tyson never fought a great swarming fighter.

He didn't hit that hard. Marciano would have been in his chest from the first round on.
