I think even King knew he didn't have to squeeze a legitimate title threat into this bogus tournament . Holmes was ranked before it ever started. Anything else is conjecture and ultimately false.
How do you know Holmes was already ranked back in 1976. Those Ring rankings were created in March 1977.

Do you have access to the Ring's monthy rankings?

Besides if the tournament started in February 1977 than King was buying those rankings in 1976. Which again fits Hopmes timeline.

Yes, I realize Holmes wasn't in the tournament, but it is obvious that Don King was protecting him on the Foreman-Young undercard with a 5-1-0 fighter.

I just don't see any fight that puts him in the #6 slot until Shavers. But there he is, #6 in 1976.

Scott LeDoux bopping Howard Cosell on the head after getting jobbed against Johnny Boudreaux and dislocating his toupe is timeless.

1976 end of the year ratings......end of the year!! You're starting to sound like another conspiracy theorist. Do you have proof King bought Holmes ranking? Neumann dropped out losing to Bobick. Wepner also dropped losing to Bobick. Shavers still in for beating Williams. I may be getting my years mixed up here....but do you have a better ranking for Holmes at that time, and who should be ahead of him?

Of course I don't. I am just speculating. Hell the FBI had little proof. But Holmes' fight history until Shavers does not warrant a #6 ranking.

So how did he get there?

End of the year means nothing. Do you think if a fighter gets KOed in Janurary of 1977 they are going to include him in their 1976 ranking which they published in March 1977? Of course not.

See uf you can find Buster Douglas as recognized champion* in the annual rankings.

You wont, because he beat Tyson in 1990 and lost to Holyfield in Mach 1991. See 'end of the year rankings' mean nothing until they post them four months later.

But that's irrelevant because Holmes doesn't have the 1976 resumé to warrant a #6 ranking.

*As being ranked #1. The Ring was in that bizarre period where they weren't identifying champions but they usually put the champ in the #1 slot. Buster never got the #1 slot because of the timing.

I wasn't in charge of the Rink rankings, I wouldn't know. I do know he was ranked in 1976 before the year end ratings came out..

Come on. "In charge" are you angry too?

I wish someone would go OCD crazy and post every Ring monthly ranking for the past 100 years.

It is a small thing to ask. It's only two pages, 1200 times or 2400 scans. lol

But I would really like to have an archive of the monthly rankings.

The annual rankings can be deceiving.

Im not angry, and I wish the same as you. I just don't see how in the world Holmes couldn't be ranked in '76 but be in the years end rankings. You gave the Douglas example, but he won and lost in the same year, and looked feeble in his loss. Imo there is a difference.

Soon further review Douglas was in the year end ratings 1989, 1990, and 1991.

                    Cool!

Yeah, Douglas is in the rankings all three years but he never gets the #1 spot as champion. Which for a very short time, he was but the timing played against him.

OK, but what does any of thel have to do with Holmes being ranked in "76?
