I can only judge them base on their time period but I can't judge them all time because those times, rules and etc were all different. One notable case is Dempsey's refusal to fight Harry Wills, a top-ranked Black boxer, even though Wills was the number one contender and Dempsey had agreed to fight him. I was never a big fan ( not hater ) of Marciano. You are kinda proving my point. Both of these guys have dirt on their resumes if you wanted to pick them apart but the past is the past.

Lets stay on Tyson since he's still alive lol.
    - - Dempsey didn't refuse to fight Wills, they agreed to mega fights in 1920/21 but both fights were cancelled by Boston and NY politicos, but Johnson refused to rematch Langford or Jeanette for the title while in France, nor would he fight Wills.

Never defended against a single Black Fighter in spite of that being a golden age for black heavies.

Dude that's point. That would never happen today for whatever reason you would want to use.

You can't compare old fighters to new fighters. Nobody would be considered great until they compare their skills to all races and styles. Nobody can go in boxing today or without fighting a slick black fighter, a high pressure Mexican fightee, a good Filipino, a good counter puncher, a good Eastern or Central Asian fighter. back in those days. They didn't have all those different types of styles and races fighting. It was just mostly white guys fighting on white guys. Then you gotta put it in context all these champions in the twenties and the thirties and the forties they weren't facing gold olympians or high ranked fighters in their prime. but within their fights, these dude would go sixty wins against pork chop willie and cleaner boy john and paper boy Willis, and all this other stuff you don't know any of these fighters, they really fought people with full time jobs not legit fighters. You don't know if these boxes were coming off the streets of working a part-time job. working in a gym Friday and fighting for the title belt on Saturday. There's not even a wiki page on half of the fighters they fought in their primes. That's like me saying, oh, during a basketball tournament at rucker park, I scored thirty points against people who are six feet tall, right. And the story kept ongoing on for years and years right and then you finally meet somebody who watched me play in that tournament and they'd be like, yeah, he did play a tournament against people who were 6'6 feet tall and he was only like 5'9, but what I failed to tell you is I was he was playing against Middle schoolers, that happened to be 6 feet tall, and I was 35 years old. Yeah, they were taller then me, but I had way more years of experience skills and overall strength to bully the 6 foot middle schools around. So we gotta put it in content, we don't know any of these people, a lot of them really fought. And that's why I don't romanticize that golden age boxers at all. And that goes for basketball, too and football, it was different rules, different leagues and different levels of competition. That's like playing baseball and be the greatest baseball ever. And you never play against, no cuba is no puerto ricans, no dominicas, no japanese, no blacks. That's why even white people say, babe, ruth ain't the best. You're not the best if you didn't play against no Negroes. Imagine a champion now that fought in the middle weight division and never fought one mexican, one black person, one easter european, no filipino, no nothing, all he fought were white people, you really think that would be the best fighter ever ?

Dempsey could had fought a non sanctioned fight.

I didn't feel like typing so I used voice AI. Disregard any gammar issues.

You are talking about Jack Johnson? You randomly mentioned Johnson without a entry.
