Tokyo Douglas v Prime Marciano?

It is interesting for people to see that all financial ventures have to have damage control... Yes even the bookies, at a certain point it does not make sense to take a bet. Logically it makes absolute sense. Despite the rare chance, at some points that rare chance can become a major liability.
People also do not realize how much trial and error went into these institutions. Vegas! Hooow boy! They would extend invitations to places in the world where real gamblers go, like the middle east. Laughing at the rubes coming in, that is until... Middle Eastern Rube royalty would lose and lose on a number and each time put more money on that number, and when they hit... they wiped out the casinos. Vegas learned its lesson that day and to this day Vegas will never be the ******** mecca that places off the coast of Portugal and in other parts of ASia are.
People often don't realize that a bookie takes his percentage off the top and what he really wants is balanced action. Lots of action, but balanced. Bookmakers who gamble suffer.
That's why there are odds and point spreads.
When a Mike Tyson or a Secretariat or a Nevele Pride appears on the scene it throws all the bets out of wack and the bookies run to hide.
At the risk of being called a racist, what's a bookie's dream fight?
A Puerto Rican vs. a Mexican.
Blacks bet on basketball, whites on football, mostly. I wonder if it's Latinos that carry boxing?
You can't ask, you'll get called racist. LOLLast edited by Willie Pep 229; 03-13-2025, 08:36 PM.Comment

I've only ever posted on this boxing message board. It sounds like this has been a small community of people who have been interacting on several forums for several decades it's pretty amazing. And odd, for the ones who had have a grudge with eachother for that long.Comment

Yeah. Growing up I swear some of the bookmakers we knew were math geniuses with eight grade educations.

I am fortunate to have had both an education on the streets and in the academy (one year towards a PHD). Both were great experiences would not trade either. But the street guys were so much smarter... Just saying.Comment

Goes back farther than that... I am convinced that in another life Dr Z was a troublesome dwarf that made me, a royal prince at the time, slip over him, whereupon I hit my head and died... Queen B? Was the Egyptian Nati Nati... he loosened all the posts on my Chariot and down I came tumbling, my last dying words: "I will get revenge!"

I used to post Scott's contributions on this forum because I missed his intelligent musings. He and I were constantly trading winner places by email in the weekly pick'em forum run by a former AOL guy. But Scott sadly passed as did that guy. A lot of AOL guys were passing because they had histories going back to Joe Louis and Rocky.
Nobody on this forum ever made mention of him. Nobody knows who U are other than being extraordinarily Dense.Comment

Had to edit this because I'm going on the assumption there are some smart kids out there. And a smart 6-year-old who was from a boxing family could probably have a pretty vivid memory. But alas I know it is a stretch.
