    - - Carlos looks in good shape there. When do you think the interview was made?

Clearly after the Hearns fight so 1985 or early 1986 is a good guess I think.

Note this was back when cigarettes was mainstream. We can see monzon smoking in the final of the clip lol.

I like how he emphasizes Hagler being a southpaw and how difficult it is to fight against righties.

A real gem Batts! One of the hardest things about getting older is when you see so many shades of grey where there was once Black and white... Monzon did some horrid things... But he also had real class. He represented himself in that brief few moments as someone with insight, intelligence, and social grace.

Must be all those cigs! I will never understand it... People smoked like chimneys when we were kids, yet they moved fast, did everything one could do physically today and a whole lot more, and then... one day, at around 70 years old, if a disease did not catch em, they collapsed and died relatively peacefully, compared to a long hospital stay at least...

          Carlos did indeed look great.

Monzon didn't care if 'smoking was mainstream' he would have smoked in any epoch. He was a psycho.

There are photos of him running (training) with a cigarette in his mouth.

Never could understand why he never seemed to tire. Probably sold his soul.

Probably some South American VooDoo shlt at play.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. I respect all cultures (no matter how f ucked up).

Monzon was.....a complex personality. He often demonstrated class and poise; and other times, not so much.
              great champion, either way.

I think it would be a hard fought decision--every time they fought. No KOs unless by cut. Probably among the most intriguing MW matchups ever. Nobody is coming to run or be cute.

                  - - Also Carlos was more an international fighter and overall fought better comp. Think the only away fight Marv had was beating Minter in England for the WBC title.

Many of his early fights were at Brockton High School and throughout New England before taking on the best down in Russell Peltz's hotbed in Philadelphia. Marvin had just 3 away fights (outside the United States); "Fuly Obel" II in San Remo, Italy, Noberto Carbrera at Chapiteau de l'Espace Fontvieille, Monaco, and of course, Minter at Wembley. Not that it mattered any regarding Marv's mindset. At home or on the road, and like King Carlos; he brought along his can of whoopass wherever he traveled.
