I would say Hagler fought better competition--quite close though. Who cares what country they were from or where the fight took place? There is no one close to Hearns's equal on Monzon's ledger. No, not Benvenuti or Valdez--at least in my opinion.

A win over a man with a legendary name does not win much praise from me if the legendary name is too far past his best, as in perhaps Griffith.

Both of their competition was good enough. Neither avoided anyone a la Canelo. Monzon publicly affirmed that he saw Hag as a difficult opponent for himself.

      - - Emile Griffith x2, Benvenuti x2, Jose Naples, ie 5 fighters, all top rated when Monzon fought them.

Hearns a good name, but Marv let his pride rule vs Leonard by trying to outbox him, so that's 2 fights where Marv is 1-1. Then he barely sc****d Duran, and Monzon with a better record vs Vito...yer welcome...

Hagler is my favourite fighter but I think monzon may be a bad style match up for him. Hagler looked noticeably bigger against a lot of his opponents but monzon was huge for a middle. I agree someone said fights between these two would all be pts. I see monzon edging a split decision
