Of course it's both. To think otherwise would be incredibly ******. When I trained with Stevie Collins I was clearly bigger than him and stronger. But he no doubtedly hit harder. It's one of the things that separates elite fighters from the non elite, the ability to transfer energy from their legs right thru to the fist. It not just something someone does because they have strong shoulders or we see more successful bodybuilders and football players in boxing.Comment

Shoulders are a part of the body that help transmit force from the central body. If one has strong shoulders then it is easier to take the work accomplished (energy and force) through the trunk and convert it into a strong punch.
If I gave you a Dodge charger engine of 800 horses, and put it in a Volkswagen Bug, what do you think would happen? If I had my wife's arms and shoulders and my trunk and threw a punch similar question: what would happen?
Why do you equate smaller legs with weak leg strength? People like Max Baur who had gigantic shoulders also had very strong legs. Wilder for example. And BTW Bodybuilders are known to have horrible punching power, depending on their arms not even their shoulders!
Aside from the these comments, punching hard has elements involving timing, ways of converting movement to force, the kinematic chain, how things flow from the floor up to the contact point... People punch hard utilizing different principles. Bruce Lee used speed and explosive tendon/sinew strength.Comment

First of all, there are many ways to generate power in a blow. It is universally recognized that the spine and legs are integral. From Hsin Yi, the mother art of linear hitting in China where: "the hips are a bow and the spine a string" to the words of Dempsey telling us how to convert weight to force through our legs (stepping and settling).

It's the same thing with pitching a baseball. It all starts in the legs and energy is transferred upward and thru the arm. Just different mechanics to it. Unfortunately Z will not be able to understand this.Comment
