I'm not sure we were watching the same fights. Frazier gave Ali the worst maulings in his life and most of it happened on the inside where you claim Frazier was very weak.

The only thing Ali gave him trouble with was pulling his head down which was an illegal move but unfortunately for Clay, doing that played right into Smoking Joe's style. Lowering his center of gravity like that usually ended up with Joe exploding upwards with a left hook.

Agreed. Not to mention their brief studio brawl in 1974. If anyone was to be mauled that day it wasn't Joe Frazier. Ali's brother and the fire department had to pull Joe off of Ali.

Not at all. Frazier more or less manhandled Ali in fight 1. Ali w successful in fight 2 laying on Frazier's head to break off the action. That was effective not because Ali was stronger. It worked because Tony Perez was a complete waste of space as a referee.

I'm talking about the second and third fight. In their first match Ali did very little clinching. Frazier was easy to clinch and tie up as the 2nd and fight showed. Did Ali clinch Frazier behind the head, yes. Very easily. Was it allowed by the ref Perez? Unfortunately it was. Ali should have been warned at oh the 20th time he did it , and had points taken away after that if he kept it up. It would have been a very different match.

Futch counted the clinch/grabs that Ali initiated after the second fight and it was in the 130's over 12 rounds. That's pretty disgraceful actually.
