I think Cleveland Williams is a tragic figure.

One of the biggest punchers in history, who ended up getting shot & it robbed him of his abilities.

When Muhammad Ali beat him, he didn't even really celebrate, so they asked him why & he said, "That's not the real Cleveland Williams"

Tommy Burns' new arena burnt to the ground the next AM in what is probable arson. Arthur Pelkey became the new white hope, but charged with murder before being cleared, yet tragically couldn't fight a lick after this fight, getting beat up and KOed endlessly before retiring to Ontario as a police officer and city councilman before dying in the strange sleeping sickness pandemic sweeping the country.
No, Triller owed Holyfield millions for a prior canceled fight. He got over 4 million I think for Belfort.

Got find dude's name because I can remember the jist of a story that sees a man fight so much to raise money to save his sister he would die from the exhaustion. He did save his sister though, and got to see her before he left.

Sad and sweet, great story. I'll try to find it.

          - - So, you say Triller already owed him millions, and then you can't say that they paid him 4mil for his embarrassment vs Belfort?

I know no facts regarding this, including who "Triller" is . . .

But no, I could see Don King not paying all he owes to someone, for one fight, then getting the guy to fight for him again anyway. Then paying him something the second time.

I know that sounds absurd but Don King was absurd. So maybe if we put a face to Triller we wouldn't be surprised.

You can't apply logic or even reasonableness to the fight game. Anything can happen.

I repeat I know no facts regarding Holyfield's dealings. But when it comes to prize fighting I never say "WTF" any more.

apparently trump paid mike tyson a 7 million dollar cheque after a big fight but mike put it in his pocket but forgot to bank it and just lost it. easy come easy go.
mike used his brains to get rich again as only a genius can. no one can keep iron mike down for long.

Tragic as his death was McCarty deserted his wife and young baby.
She had to take him to court for maintenance.

"Luther McCarty, son of an Irish mother and a half-Native American father [1], and a cousin of fellow boxer Tom McCarty, was married at 16 at Sidney, Ohio, in May 1908 to Rhoda Wright 19, and had at least one child, a daughter named Cornelia. His wife Rhoda ended up having to work in a saloon kitchen in Fargo, ND and had Luke arrested briefly for failure to support them. He worked as a sparring partner in Culbertson, MT, in the Fall of 1910.

September 23rd, 1912 McCarty was scheduled to fight Dan Daly at Pittsburgh but backed out.

In January of 1913, following his sensational win over Al Palzer, McCarty announced he would be paying $100 a month to his estranged wife in alimony and child support. "

Tom Johnson told me that Don King still owed him money. This was many years ago, Don may have straightened the debt out doe. But I'd kinda doubt that...............Rockin'

You being a fighter might have an opinion on this.

Who is the thief? Who's the bigger thief?

Dan Duva promoted Bramble-Mancini II. Bramble was angry because Duva (his manager's son) made Bramble (the now Champion) take parity with Ray Mancini. Both recieved $650K. Bramble felt it was racist.

Bramble would leave the Duvas for whatever his reasons were, and signed with Don King.

Don King began to set-up a big money showdown with Hector Camacho (Which King blew big time, but that's a story for a different time.) and staged a preliminary title defense for both fighters, called The Preamble to Bramble, in Miami, 1986.

He promised Bramble one million for the fight but then only paid him 800K. Brambled sued for the 200K he felt he was cheated out of. Didn't collect.

So who is the thief? Did Dan Duva screw him over by underpaying him or Don King who got him $150K more, but 200K less than he promised?

P.S. Ever watch the opening scene to the Great White Hype, where the Don King character (S. L. Jackson) explains to his champion why he can't pay him for the fight he just won and then doesn't. Art imitating life?
