The most impressive, evolved modern heavyweight might be James Jeffries!

There is no question London wrote like a reporter... Any reporter can be gratuitous and even hyperbolic to a degree... that does not translate as a lack of understanding, or, as a need to sell papers for its own sake. London happened to be a great writer. He could write a grocery list and people would want to have a look.
Was London selling the fight? Well he was not telling people not to come! I mean thats a given QB, he had hyped this fight as a watershed moment, pursuing Johnson and asking Jeffries out of retirement to "save the honor of the White Race." (London's words) If anything the source I gave is projection on the part of London. Jeffries was about as Germanic as half ***ish me! He was a strong midwestern boy, raised on chucking things around land (like Baur) short nights and long days.
Did London Hype Jeffries with puffery? I doubt it. Put yourself there for a moment... Jeffries looked in shape, he spoke confidently. You are part of his camp, in so far as you asked him to make the effort. Are you then going to say "As great as the great Germanic warrior Jeffries is, the inferior Johnson will prevail."
When all is said and done, London could have manufactured the whole thing from the beginning, but that requires extraordinary proof that I do not see.

As usual you are way off ... there is no evidence of him being a wide eyed reporter trying to hype a big fight for its own sake, quite the contrary... did you even read the link at least? And this is one example of so many... He pursued Johnson. He toed the line between giving "the Ethiopian" his due (London's words) and then decrying others to take Johnson out. HOW WOULD YOU KNOW how London's account of the fight varied? just wondering...

He looked like you after the fight. His ills were well known to insiders who made a fortune in wagers…yer welcome…Comment

Especially considering the progressive side of London... Why would he be blind to the negative implications of Eugenics? Things like romanticising stereotypes and such... they are such a departure from the Eugenic idea to create human beings that are bred to resist horrid diseases, conditions that potentially damn an individual to an inferior quality of life... London absolutely had compassion and real concern for how the classes of society were detrimental and discriminatory... It is to many, a possible reason he committed suicide. Many maintain that his book Martin Eden, a great read, was autobiographical.
I have issues when things do not make sense. Drives my wife crazy sometimes lol. And to me, I don't see London's angle
. As far as Queen B, his point would be a lot better if he was willing to put some work in lol... But yeah that is not going to happen.

Ok so... what proof of this set up can you demonstrate? London was a bit of a hustler, it is not entirely improbable. Do you have any proof? Was London in on it? did he bet on Johnson? Billy Martin once decked a marsh mellow salesman... Was that you?Comment

His own camp bet on him ,you cant get anymore insider than that.
This fool doesn't mind being continually ripped to bits, what he fears is being ignored.Last edited by Ivich; 09-01-2023, 04:05 PM.Comment

Which could it be Queen B? Was Johnson a scribe and little else? or a mastermind who no doubt bet on JOhnson while setting up Jeffries as a conquering hero?
It just is a nasty pleasure to take apart the Queen b with good old fashioned rational thought. One of these days if we could put him back together the right way...Comment
