There is this weird incident where Kearns offers the Monyreal go and there is a next day acceptance by some guy (I can not remember his name) who is connected to MSG (the pre 1925 Garden so it might be the MSG Bowl). This guy tthentwo days later retracts the offer and says Wills is not available. Which is really strange because Wills' people never seem to be in that conversation.

It was also around that time Kearns was talking Johnson, Mexico City, and a one million dollar guarantee. More smoke.

It was an offer of $350K and involved greater risk for promoters, while Kearns was being made several offers from London and France for $500K and more to rematch Carpentier. Kearns demanded $500K believing a Wills fight would generate well over a million dollars. This again wasn’t “Dempsey” turning down the offer. Agreed with everything until you called Kearns smart.

The dumb SOB ended up in Shelby Montana. At best, he pulled in, for Dempsey, 220K to 280K.

No I said Dempsey decline it after it was already off Kearns' plate. I know the article, (if it's the NYT) the interview you speak of as proof. I say that came after the whole thing was already dead and that Dempsey was not even aware the Kearns had already lost interest.

Now just to be clear, Dempsey doesn't say no to a Wills fight, he says the Montreal date is too soon.

But as I said Dempsey's concerns were irrelevant the fight was DOA.
