  • Getting Too Invested In A Boxer

How do you cope watching your favourite boxers fight. When you were a kid how did you cope emotionally when your hero was fighting.
If you are emotionally invested in sport and your team wins you get more testosterone and if your guy loses you t goes down.
I got that way about frank bruno as a kid where i was so wanting him to win i just got so nervous and edgy.
I had to go jogging after.
Now with Fury I get so edgy and I sometimes think I can't give myself so much adrenaline and nervous energy but that is what being a fan means.
As a problem drinker drink is now not an option but can you tell me your fights in your life where you felt so emotionally invested in the sport that you get that feeling.
Joe Rogan talks about how being emotionally invested in a boxer made him too damn nervous. He also would go for a run to deal with it.
Can you tell us a fight that you were so invested in that you'll never forget. maybe you had a huge bet on the fight. what do you remember about a fight in your past that you will always remember your hyped up stress of the fight. for me it was tyson vs bruno i was up all night and i remember being so damn nervous and i just worried about frank and i had huge surge of adrenaline and i'll never forget that feeling when he lost.

After Mike Tyson and Roy Jones I never get too invested in boxers. I understand they will eventually lose.

To tell you the truth, that's why I prefer individual sports over team ones these days. Because I never find myself getting too invested in one athlete/fighter over another. Although these days I watch a lot more wrestling and bowling. With wrestling, there's the understanding that it's not actual competition, so the only let down is when you know someone is a star and they're not being booked/scripted to be one by those in charge. And what I like about bowling is it's quite a friendly competition. You rarely, if ever see trash talking or much disrespect among competitors and since I started watching it again, I didn't realize how much went into a lot of the technical aspects of the game in terms of velocity, curve, aim and ball selection. This guy named Jason Belmonte is like Jack Nicklaus with the most majors, but Walter Ray Williams Jr. still has the most overall titles, like 48. But still 15 majors is amazing, dude.

I also try to find a few to invest in, so if one loses, there's some backups to enjoy watching, but overall, I root for a good game/fight/competition.

yes i like snooker which people call a pastime rather then a sport but to me it is a great sport and i can get really into a match in a big setting.
i understand about bowling as i like snooker the same way.
but boxing really can get the nerves going into overdrive when the fight actually starts after years of being set up.

Its just all about being a grown man. I'll follow and root for various fighters, often those who come from my home region or who I discover when they are still on their ways up. If they win, I am excited and have fun, because I enjoy being excited and having fun, celebrate with those who are with me because thats fun too. But at the end of the day still have life to take care of. Similar, if they lose bummed out for a minute or two, then get back to life- because who wants to sit around feeling bad.

Ditto for team sports, I've seen the teams I root for win title- watch the replays of it, go to the championship parade, enjoy the ride with other fans because its a fun celebration. Seen them lose in 'heartbreaking' fashion, oh well get on with life. Some will argue that being emotionally invested and letting the loss bring you down shows that you are a true fan, I think thats just justification for being childish. Just gotta be a grown man about things.

I don’t like when my favs fight each other.

Arguello/Pryor and GGG/Canelo case in point.

Nice. If you like snooker, I'm sure you're familiar with Allison Fisher, one of the winningest female players and the winningest female pool player. Another great female pool player was Jeanette Lee, The Black Widow. They did a 30 for 30 ESPN doc on her.

                  Exactly this for me too.

When those guys would lose, it'd break me.

When Douglas knocked Tyson out, I cried

Now, I was a little kid at the time, but still.

When Holyfield beat Tyson in the first fight, it was like the whole hood was depressed.

We really rode with Tyson in the '90s. Grown men cried when he lost

When Roy got KO'd by Tarver & then Glen Johnson, it was like a death.

Ever since then, I haven't gotten THAT invested in any boxers.

I'm invested in guys like Terence Crawford, but if he loses to Spence, I'll survive
