  • Southpaw Heavyweight Ranked Contenders? 1924-2023

Following on from an abortive attempt by a poster to insinuate Lennox Lewis shamelessly ducked southpaws,I took a look back at those righties through the years.
Using The Rings annual ratings those southpaws which featured in the top ten during the last near century, are surprisingly very scarce..
We have the following contenders and champions
    Melio Bettina

    Karl Mildenberger

    Michael Moorer

    Chris Byrd

    Corrie Sanders

    Tony Thompson

    Ruslan Chagaev

    Luis Ortiz

    Mike Perez

    Olexsandr Usyk

Anyone think of anybody I left out who made the top ten?

    - - Not surprising that you never figured that there are infinitely more lefties starting in the 90s than from 1924-1990.

Water wet, sky blue, grass is green and snails is you!

So why don't you do the math? If there were 8 contender/champion southpaws from the 90's until now what percentage does that make of overall contenders/champions? My guess is it would still be very low.

Today there are 3 ranked southpaws in boxing's top 10 heavyweights. They are Usyk, Ortiz, the Zhang. Southpaws. And the best young heavyweight today is Jalolov. A south paw.

The 90s and 00's had plenty of Southpaws too. I could name 4 of them fought for or held world titles. You could say the lion was afraid of them. He dropped his belts rather than fight them.

              So they say...

It is great to see this thread! I personally believe this point about the relative amount of Southpaws in the heavyweights history is vital here and Z's failure to understand it, should not be accepted as a mere oversight. Being a true believer in the Socratic method I tried to lead him with a clue. And for all it did I might have just as well not put the effort in.

If it is true as some believe that Lefty's are smarter than the general population I am willing to bet Z is a righty!

And if tomorrow every heavyweight became a southpaw pray tell WHAT does this have to do with when Lewis was fighting and the general amount of Southpaw heavyweights in the past? Logic is your FRIEND!!! Just ask Queenie!!!.... errr wait a second, don't..ask Queenie...
