  • Joe Jennette vs. Jack Johnson 1913

"For the past year both my manager and myself have tried to obtain a contest with Jack Johnson. We have repeatedly sent him challenges, all of which he has ignored. This moving picture champion, who by a lucky break at Reno became the World's Champion, now refuses to defend that title. I hereby defy him to meet me. I further add that this refusal to fight me is due to cowardice. He knows that he will lose his title if he ever meets Langford or myself. He is now stalling about meeting Langford, but really wants to pick on Jim Flynn or Al Palzer, and he knows right well that Palzer is a novice but these are the kind of men he would fight. I have whipped him decisively several times in Philadelphia, and he deliberately quit on me in one contest over there. I say quit because when I had him bad he maliciously fouled me to save himself from defeat. He has been offered $10,000 to box me six rounds in Philadelphia and $10,000 to fight me in this city ( New York) but both these offers he has ignored. If he can get up enough courage to box me twenty rounds I will bet him $5,000 that I will stop him. I will not say "knock him out" for he has not enough courage to stand up and fight and be knocked out. I sail for Europe this week and will return on the next ship if Johnson has enough nerve to accept my defy. I know that I can beat him and I know that the public would like to see the title change hands. Now, Mr Johnson, are you a fighter or a 'four-flusher.' Your answer to this letter will decide the question."

Johnson - who attempted to knock out the first of two men on this card - dropped Jeannette three times in round 1, but after that his opponent stuck it out and gave as much as he took. In the end both the New York Evening World and the Washington Times declared it a very even fight. UPDATE: According to a consensus of the Philadelphia newspapers, Johnson won the bout. The Philadelphia Record and Philadelphia Evening Bulletin both awarded the bout to Johnson and the Philadelphia Inquirer account stated that "Johnson seemed unable to get to Jeannette with any of his blows effectively, although the New Yorker took the count more than once to gather his wits about him when the milling got a bit warm."

      JOHNSON BEATS JEANETTE
Negro Champion, However, Was Disqualified on an Alleged Foul After outclassing Joe Jeanette for a round and a half, Jack Johnson, The Negro Heavyweight Champion of the World, lost the bout at the National Athletic Club last night on an alleged foul. Jeanette, after being thumped in lively fashion in the first round, assumed a crouching pose in the second round. He undertook to run in and clinch, ducking a vicious left hand swing. Johnson ripped a right hand hook up for Jeanette's jaw. The latter dropped to the floor, writhing in apparent agony. He claimed to have been struck a foul blow. He was removed to the dressing room and the club physician substantiated his claim. Johnson was promptly disqualified. Jeanette professed to be in great pain and lay in his dressing room in apparent agony. It is understood that the police proposed to keep Johnson, Jeanette and the club official under surveillance.

Jeannette's account of his fights with Johnson does not tally with the record book.
You know this ,but it doesn't stop your little
      hate agenda .
Oh well, while you are trying to character assassinate Johnson ,at least you are leaving Joe Louis alone, lol

I have my little secrets. Jennette is on film by the way vs. Langford, have you seen it? He has a spear like jab. Like Langford and McVey he desired a title shot for 1909-1915, but never got one. Johnson low blowed Jeannette after a rough first round. Doctors confirmed a bad low blow. All of his early fights vs. Johnson happened when he had limited experience Jeannette took up boxing late at age 25 with no amateur experience and was 0-3 before meeting Johnson the first time who was a veteran of at least 40 fights.

Thank you for copy and paste at Box Rec. Jeannette was winless 0-3 fighter with no amateur experience when this fight happened.

Show us where Jeannette ever "decisively whipped "Johnson?

Johnson turned down 2 offers of $10,000 to defend against Jeannette because his price for a defence was $30,000.
When it was met he signed for the fights . eg twice to defend against Jeannette in NY for the McMahon brothers, the NYAC vetoed the fights and threatened any promoter who attempted to put them on with their licence being pulled.
I've posted the details several times including the promoters public statements, and those of the NYAC.
But you carry on, fill your little dishonest boots, you sad creature lol

I've seen the Langford v Jeannette fight or what there is of it, its on a French Pathe Newsreel
Your little secrets? lol What you are is no secret, believe me Sunshine!

Johnson signed to fight both Langford and McVey for H McIntosh in Australia, like the two times Johnson signed to defend against Jeannette in NY .its a matter of public record and all the lies and bull**** you type will never change that! Johnson was beating Jeannette handily whenJeannette claimed a foul. Why would Johnson need to foul him?
