    Holmes vs Spinks ?
    Close but clear.
Losing the "0" can also be humiliation.

The bums of today are running away from each other after your idol, risking all kinds of insults and harassment from the fans. Losing ******ity should be bad.

Never once even hinted he was an ATG, although had he fought way back when , WHO KNOWS

Historians thought the movies that came out were top notch.
Ditto cars and most everything else.
Looking back, ALL OF THAT SHlT was inferior.
Again, no way of them to know any better.
Apply this logic to boxers of the day.

SRR's skill may have travelled through the era's.
That is what ATG is all about.
It's a little paradoxical. Is being remembered enough for 'greatness'?

He gave the fans great fights. Do great fights make a fighter great?

Or does only a resume of big wins against top ranked fighters make a fighter great?

I suspect 'great' is a relative label.

I'd bet you and I would think Tyson-Holyfield I one of the great HW fights. But ask most 'fans' and they will remember only Hollyfield II and Spinks.

Gatti gets in! Great fights will get you there.

Besides he was good for the fight game; cut him some slack, he gave us his all (even if it was wanting.

You don't have to call him a champion but in 1940s fight jargon he was a 'contender' worth noting.

0's are hard to maintain and everyone wants one
Especially after reaching a certain level across mult divs.
My so called idol became the model of how not only to conduct BUSINESS, but to evolve when forced to (his hands weren't getting any better with age).
Kicked Abum to the curb and almost instantly became the face of boxing, P4P and PPV king.
Those accolades are not thrown around on a whim (besides Dud Bumford, but he will never be the face of boxing).

          ''Great'' fights
Vs guys most fighters toy with, he went life and death.
Sometimes fans have to be cruel for the better of the sport.
That we won't blindly cheer for the mundane.
Yeah, entertainment has a value and he was entertaining.
In context, any legit fighter who struggled as much as Gatti did, that fighter would be laughed out of the sport.
We constantly see this in NSB.
''Right, Usyk went life and death with 13L and he's supposed to beat Fury ?'' is just 1 example.

If your idol never existed, boxers today would fight each other. Because the 3 most idolized boxers in the 21st century are Pac, May and Nelo. Pac and Nelo have a total of 10 losses and 4 draws. This would enable modern boxers to fight courageously.

Your idol is solid fighter and smart businessman. I rank him at #9, see the first post. But, he is the main reason of Tanks, Shakurs, Boots, Garcias, Crawfords, Spences etc..

You don't enjoy watching a couple of well matched ham and eggers go at it for six rounds in a club fight?

The game is only interesring to you if the fight comes with lots of hype.

It's people like you that helped us to get saddled with multiple scantioning bodies. If a title wasn't at stake you see the fight as something worth laughing at?

While would anyone laugh at a prize fighter?

Are you a fight fan or just sports fan.

                  Which is it,
Constantly winning (maintaining an 0) is meh and LOSING is all the rage ?!?!?
Or does that line of irrationality only apply to those you ''hate'' ?!?!?

If Pac or Nelo or any other MFer had an 0, that fighter would be above ATG.

And to claim my ''idol'' got by on beating fighters worst than Pac, you are just hating.
Why does it seem like no one wants to mention Pac's sad resume while at the same time claiming him to be some kind of legit MFer ?!?!?

I'm a Nelo fan and he has the POTENTIAL to be an ATG.
If he retired today, he wouldn't quite make it.
He'd be right on the cusp.
Closer than any active fighter by far.

I agree that Mayweather is a deserving ATG, but its not the '0' that makes him such (although that to an extent is a byproduct of his greatness). That being written, I think the bolded portion may not be entirely correct. I submit Sven Ottke as exhibit 'A' in that argument. I wouldn't put him above ATG, yet he was a world champ with an '0' on the end of his record.

It is feasible in this fractured sport to protect an '0', and sometimes fighters do less than scrupulous things to do that.

What I enjoy, others over glamorize where a ham n egger will be anointed some kind of folk hero.
Should we all bow down to Butterbean, King of the 4 rders ?

For the most part, Gatti was much like Mike Tyson and LeMeh... Weren't known for beating legit opponents. Yet they live off of that bad ass rep.
Pure head scratching way to be a fan of the sport.

Sanctioning bodies are a necessary evil.
It's painfully dull when there is only 1 title at stake.
More titles, more opportunities for other fighters.

And if we are dishing out blame, ''BLAME THE SPORT''
It's the only ''sport'' where the score is a mystery
Where the judges have the worst POV than anyone in the arena.
3 judges can see the same fight and have different score cards
Where scoring is pretty much ''subjective''
                      On and on.

As for fight ''fans'', boxing has the worst.
I can't think of a sport that has such a bunch of double standard having hypocrites.

It's fight fans like me who are able to place glorified barroom brawls in their rightful place.
