  • Gerry Cooney VS Tommy Morrison

    Gentlemen Gerry Cooney 25-0-0 (21) c. 1981-82 vs. Tommy The Duke Morrison 27-0-0 (23) c. 1991-92.

Two very good young heavyweights, massive power with huge PR machines behind them - Neither able to fulfill the astronomical expectations placed upon them, but both a formidable problem for just about anybody alive in their day.
Who takes it????? The All-American GWH of the 80s or the All-American GWH of the 90s?

I like Cooney by knockout within 6. Morrison had a great hook, but Gerrys was better and more debilitating. Morrison also had the more questionable chin and was on the canvas from BRUTAL knockouts.

      - - Cooney KOed by old George, while Tommy smartly used movement to outbox George for a title.

      Tangible advantage goes to Tommy.

A triangle theory using Cooney at his worst while calling George old, and Tommy at his best while never mentioning George be ancient. Brilliant!

Foreman gave Morrison A LOT of respect in that fight.

He did. To much. But Morrison fought the perfect game plan taking advantage of Foremans slow movement, and not letting himself get dragged into slugging.

              - - U toddler mudpie theory...priceless.

George was old the day he announced his comeback and never got any younger...duh!!!

Post Tommy, "ancient George" knocked out a better fighter than either in Moorer to regain the supposed Lineal title that propelled him as a permanent fixture Valhalla when he so choses.

It's sorta the reverse of when they announced U birth and U never got any smarter...

Why was Moorer a better fighter? Was it because he won the title from the same Holyfield you disparage every chance you get? Did he beat better comp? Look better? Personally I think both Cooney and Morrison would knock Moorer out.

And you obviously missed my point. It wasn't about George so much as your bias. You wanted to make George sound old vs Cooney while Gerry was at his worst mentally and physically, but didnt use the same adjective when describing him against Morrison who arguably fought the best fight of his career. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

I would go with Cooney by late stoppage or UD. He held his own against a prime Holmes for nearly 13 full rounds. In fact, if that were a 12 round fight, and it wasn't for multiple point deductions he wins that fight by SD. He also knocked out Norton, Lyle and Young. Morrison's best wins were Ruddock, Tillis and Thomas. I won't count Foreman because Morrison ran for most of that fight. George was in no condition to chase him all night.

                    - - 25 years U on the internet reviewing boxing, and U ain't yet figured how to read the timeline of a fighter?

The Holy that Moorer beat was rightly the face of heavyweight boxing during post Tyson incarceration, and Moorer retired him with a hard heart.

In short, George beat the man who beat the man, and neither Cooney nor Morrison had ever beat the man no matter what U simples thinks.
