You stated Monzon had crooked South American referees deducting points from his opponents for non existent fouls.
" Referees from South America cheated for him as well, calling fouls against opponents who had not committed a foul. You can see this in the second Briscoe fight"
I asked you to provide names of referees and fights in which this occurred.
You provided NOTHING
Briscoe had no points deducted in either of his fights with Monzon, your statement that this hampered /intimidated him from fighting his normal fight is just your opinion and not supported by fact. No ringside reports say the referee was overly partial to Monzon in the 2nd Briscoe fight or that he was a crooked official.
The referee for the 2nd Briscoe fight was Victor Avendano .
Monzon had100 fights ,Avendano refereed him just twice.
Don't worry about your imagination, you have a very vivid one!
Carlos Monzón vs Bennie Briscoe II November 11, 1972 - YouTube
Rd1.Briscoe lands 2 borderline shots and 2 on the top of Monzon's thigh. No warnings
Rd2. Briscoe warned for carless head work unjustified imo.
Rd3.Briscoe lands 4 borderline/low punches and is warned for careless use of the head ,justified imo.
Rd 6 .Briscoe lands low.
Rd7.Briscoe warned for kidney punch,no point deducted.
Rd9.Brisoce lands huge right hand that puts Monzon on ***** street.Monzon makes a great recovery.
Rd10,Briscoe is hurt.
Rd.11 Briscoe lands low, no warning.
Rd12 Monzon is dominating now as Bennie begins to tire from the fast pace.Monzon is able to land several uppercuts in these later rounds.
Rd 13 Briscoe land low again, no warning
Summary Monzon was able to control the range with his jab .Briscoe showed a great chin absorbing so big shots.Briscoe landed loads of shots to the kidney area ,but he was a hooker and none of them were probably intentional
Conclusion apart from an uneccessary caution for head work in the 2nd rd the referee did a decent job and Briscoe was not hampered by his officiating,he was throwing body shots the whole of the fight.in the last couple of rounds he concentrated on head punches because he knew he needed a ko to win.
Observation, that version of Briscoe, would have given the 31 years old Leonard who hadn't fought for 3 years pure hell!Comment

The Old LefHook or Ivich, I forget which, was an ex pimp and a nasty piece of work, a great message board fighter though.Comment

Very hard to classify and evaluate some of these guys.
Once I got past rating my top 3
Monzon
Hagler
Hopkins
I began to struggle, Jones didnt do much at160lbs ,nor did Toney,Leonard , or Alvarez but they may very well have beaten guys with better resumes such as Kalambay Golovkin,Nunn,McCallum,Taylor, and in some cases did.Comment

Lol same here. And there are so many really great fighters that were in this division that don't really have a division, or are in another division as far as their primacy is concerned. I'm talking fighters like Jones, Robinson, Tony. Hell even Archie Moore was at Middle for a while wasn't he? A lot of these guys are fighters that weren't great in any one division.Comment

Very true! What greatness points are rewarded or extracted for more/less time spent in one division?? Ray Leonard was prime at Welterweight, arguably, yet in his brief and more mixed stay at Middleweight he dethroned the still # 1 and undisputed champion Hagler (Your thoughts on that decision notwithstanding). Robinson was also widely regarded as prime at Welterweight, but his stay at Middleweight was long and storied. It's a point to ponder.
it seems to ring true with all those guys, they never look bad but they also rarely look great (in big fights).
Hagler didn’t look great in any one fight, he was simply better than his competition, who on paper all should have lost anyways.
same goes for Mayweather, Hopkins and Rocky.
the guys like Leonard, Duran, Ali etc they have Marquee wins against opponents that the majority deemed their equal or even better. So the stakes were very high on those nights.
Hagler had his bout with Leonard, I understand he was on his way out. I honestly feel Hagler choked under the lights against Leonard and really only got into rythm later in the fight when he saw Leonard tiring. He was star struck Hagler was, this wasn’t a moment for him to flex his ego like it was for Duran.
you saw remnant's of this against Duran, where once again he came out starstruck and felt compelled to box (play safe) and then down the stretch decided to brawl and push the conditioning advantage he likely had on most fighters.
Haglers resume at 160 is certainly good in regards to the other contenders at 160 with great status. But comparing it to atgs p4p list he’s not close at all.
the main competition based on resume would be:
Monzon
Hagler
Hopkins
however from a fight night basis there may be better middleweights out there. **** Tiger, Carter, Benton, Giardello, Robinson, Roy Jones, James Toney and Mike Mcallum to name a few. Its a very competitive weight class that few decided to attempt ruling.Last edited by them_apples; 08-16-2022, 08:04 PM.Comment
