  • Who Were the Black Heavyweight Standouts Who Were Denied Title Shots Between Tunney and Louis' Reign

I'm sure there were some very good Black heavyweight fighters between the reigns of Tunney and Louis, but we don't often hear any of them mentioned as being a glaring example of being denied a title shot like Harry Wills was, or like Joe Louis surely would have been if he had been denied a title shot.

George Godfrey comes to mind. He was ranked around #7 in 1929. Were there any others?

    - - DQed 2x via trademark low blows that were his signature punch as well as an NC for not trying to fight, and that just for 1929.

Thanks for trying. There's host of fringe black contender claimants never receiving title shots in that period because the title kept turning over.

Yes, he was disqualified a number of times. Do you ever have any point?

If you can't answer the question, then learn how to just pass by.

        - - I referenced your 1929 benchmark as your deserved marker, the answer to your question.

Godfrey was prolific enough, but perhaps not compelling enough.

Makes one wonder how many black HWs during that period never even got a chance to be developed.

With Wills chasing a title shot for seven years to no avail may have soured managers and trainers from wanting to invest in a black HW.

If they were any good, it is more than likely we would have heard, heard and heard about them, especially in today's clime.

Yes ,Box Rec doesn't tell us the full story here.We know Jack Blackburn was reluctant to take on black heavyweights because their horizons were limited. How many of the black heavies between Tunney and Louis might have been world class/champions,
given the training facilities encouragement and financial support to develop them?
              Guys like ;
              Jack Trammell
              Roscoe Toles
              Lorenzo Pack
              Tiger Jack Fox
              Unknown Winston
              Obie Walker
              etc.

I added Godfrey because he was the only one I could think of. I was asking for more examples if you know of any.

Wow, even Blackburn was hesitant to take on Louis.

To be honest, I can only think of three....

                    Godfrey

                    Larry Gains

                    Obie Walker

Could throw in Seal and Niel I suposse

Most the guys I can think of from that era are MWs.
