The night of the fight a ring wouldn't carry the moment very well - I suspose that is why the NFL has a trophy as well as the rings. But . . .

back in the 80s, down here in Miami, Michael Dokes walked into a bar one night wearing his new championship belt. He got laughed out of the bar as the chicks kept making cheeky remarks about how cute it looked.
I would not be opposed to boxers getting a ring as well, as you say, as something cool they could wear. But belts are good for press conferences, and exchanging in the ring, etc, especially when worn by a great Champion, like a Canelo, Crawford, Usyk, Fury, etc, not some bum walking around the the interim title. Nash out.

But yea I get how it doesn't work at the moment of victory.
The difference is a championship ring indicates a title won within a specific season. The belt is a perpetual award being passed on to the next title holder once it has been lost. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn't have to give away their rings to the LA Rams following their first loss since the superbowl, because the time period for winning the ring has passed (it is set and finite). Thats different from a title belt.

That being written, I would be down to take any cache or sway away from the sanctioning organizations that provide the belts.

        - -Fighters win a physical belt that lasts for a lifetime. Any loss of a title results in a new belt being made for the new titlist ad infinitum...

You know DeeMoney... I see the same thing perpetually with rank in the martial arts... When you have all these organizations it really dilutes the value of a belt...and its almost pathetic when they try to make the belts nicer looking... It shows they are aware and do not care (a-pathetic= pathetic). The real value of the belt is what it stands for... it could be made out of paper mache!

Rank inflation is what happens in many martial arts and its the same crap. Suddenly you see fat middle aged men walking around with 10th degree Black Belts, and then some schmo gets a dan ranks above a tenth degree which isn't even valid... after a 10th you have to create your own system.

The rank goes up indirect proportion to the quality and skills going down. credit to the Gracies for calling a Black Belt what it should be...that is the way I came up as well... Now they call a black belt a 7th to 10th dan its just insane...

Ok - but what the NFL does is use the Lombardi Trophy in place of the belt. It serves the purpose you suggest would be lost, not the rings but the trophy is passed on.

I am now changing my mine and thinking losing the belt may be too dramatic a loss marketing wise . . . You guys are convincing me. . . But I think fighters/scantioning bodies should add in a ring tradition with each ring representing a particular titled held just like the belts. The bodies can afford both.

Going back to the NFL again- the trophy (a new one) is passed on but each team gets to keep the one they won. I don't think that diminishes the award.

Wasn't there just a real sportsman like moment where Usyk went to the locker room and gave AJ back his belt personally? I thought that was a classy moment.

Wasn't the first belt (modern era) made for Sullivan by the people of Boston. I don't think Sullivan ever gave that belt up.
