  • Time to dump the belts and switch to rings.

I think belts are passe' and the scantioning bodies should switch to championship rings.

Although the belts are steeped in tradition, today they actually look quite silly.

Championship rings have two things going for them:

    1. The fighter can wear the ring 24/7 even when dressed in a power suit at a banquet and not look silly.

    2. What would be more appropriate then a champion to show his prowess by wearing a championship ring on his FIST?

Nah. A guy being handed a ring at the end of the fight is just daft. Keep the belts. Nash out. Nash is a true warrior and a helluva poster who resides in England.

They already do, and, more or less always had.

Champions of old had rings, trophies, cups, medals, you name it, there is no type of reward boxing hasn't given her champions. The belts are the belts, you already hit the nail on the head. No one gives a **** about the rings. To the point where they don't even realize they exist. Belts seem to dominate the market organically.

That said, I give 0 ****s. If they did away with belts and just had rings then I wouldn't really mind because all these belts given out these days are just symbolic representations of the real belts. Which, we ****ing lost anyway because we all suck in this sport

People say there is no lineal belt, but there was, until we lost it. Now nothing, **** all nothing, represents lineal and that title is doing just fine. So I'm pretty sure a ring can rep the WBC belt just fine too. I just think the reason why the ring champions wear in their suits isn't lauded over is because the belts still market better. Otherwise everyone would have a ring, cup, trophy, medal, or whatever TF else instead of belts.

What I mean to say is WBC/A/O-IBF give 0 ****s about traditionalism otherwise they wouldn't make a belt per sneeze. I'm pretty sure they hand out belts like candy because the **** is working for them and rings would be a lot cheaper so if they could swing it they probably would.

Just a bunch of assumption, I have no proof of anything except **** like the OG lineal is indeed lost as ****.

I thought that might be the case - that rings already existed - but you are correct they don't play as well visually and the scantioning bodies get a bigger **** display wise with the belts.

I get your point - the one about the belts not the one one about how wonderful you are.

The night of the fight a ring wouldn't carry the moment very well - I suspose that is why the NFL has a trophy as well as the rings. But . . .

back in the 80s, down here in Miami, Michael Dokes walked into a bar one night wearing his new championship belt. He got laughed out of the bar as the chicks kept making cheeky remarks about how cute it looked.

Belts look better in a fighter's trophy case though

Yes I agree but no one is thinking the other 99.9 % of the time the fighter is champion. NFL players love to show off their championship rings fighters don't get to show off their belts except for that one moment - belts just don't fit in everyday life outside the ring were fighters live almost their entire lives.

But yea I get how it doesn't work at the moment of victory.

Let me dovetail here if that is ok....BTW that is a nice looking ring, I am not one for ***elry...the last ***elry I wore was my wedding ring in my earlobe and... during some hard Randori type Martial Arts practice it was (not deliberately) ripped out of my ear lol, and I would lose a ring any other way.

I think there is a certain symbolism with belts. Any type of accessory that one can wear that shows a lineage... Like Martial Arts Belts, Ascots, Ties with a SCottish Clan design, etc means that some man will take the extra time and energy to accessorize. Wearing a ring is a one way arraingment. I get the ring and its on my finger... But to take the time tp tie an ascot, or don a belt, is an act that signifies both ways: 1) the man gets the props for the tradition 2) The tradition gets the props as the man makes an effort to signify the tradition in the act of wearing the belt, etc.

Also, and this is out there... Ties. When you put a tie on not trying to game the process with a tac on tie (like I would) you basically put your neck in a noose. Its one reason I hate ties as a martial artist. Originally ties came from ascots and are again, originally a signifier of association to a clan of one sort, or another. From that one becomes "a slave to fashion" so to speak... In either case, the garment symbolizes one genuflecting to something greater than self.

Belts are not as obvious as ties/ascots but a belt protects us... You gave a vetial ****** a "chastity belt." Originally belts in martial arts became Black from being white from all the practice. Martial Arts Belts came out probably after boxing belts as the original systems did not have belts, you had scrolls, and transmission as declared by a teacher...the highest being Menkyo Kudan translated as "direct transmission of one's system to another."

So how does a Black Belt protect? It protects like lifting weights in prison protects one: You look more imposing. Against a Black Belt another student will spar more cautiously, just as a bigger muscular individual will probably not be messed with compared to someone with fewer muscles.

But who protects what? Does the champ protect the belt? Or does the boxing belt protect the champ?

The champ protects the belt by way of reputation. The belt gives the champ an aura of invincibility, it is a mutually beneficial relationship.
