Reportedly, he was absolutely drained coming into the changing room after the fight, and started to hear voices

I have nothing against religion. It is, most likely, essential to us as we know our time in life is very limited.
    What happens next?

So probably his defeat to Young, and Foreman becoming a man of church, preaching, did encourage a lot of
people to fight on with their own lives.

[Jimmy was sacrificed, however. His post-career life is no fun reading.]

I have a real bias regarding Jimmy. If the judges got it right? Young beat Foreman,Norton and Ali. As it is he defeated Shavers and Lyle...

Really? I never knew he was Pentecostal. That tradition is very interesting. If George was speaking in tongues I would definitely dig the rapture, but would probably want to keep a good distance!

They have such a strick dogma it is hard to see how Freeda was allowed to box. Plus the photos of his daughters show an appearance that doesn't look very Pentecostal.

But he is some sort of ordained Christian minister.

I don't think Christians like the word 'Protestant' much anymore. They see themseleves as gnostic (but they don't use the term) and are not protesting anything, so they say.

This is a guess, but it may be regional. I say this because religious diversity, much like ethnic cuisine, is relative. In some parts of the country, ethnic cuisine is a burrito, in others?like Queens NY, you can get every variety of Mexican food there is, in an 8 block radius: Mexico City Moles, the envy of Paris, Yucatan Cerviche... I am a Buddhist and where my wife is from (Southern Louisiana) having a Baptist in town shows religious diversity... Thats about as Protestant as it gets! When I was talking to my relatives from her side, they thought Buddha was like Jesus... worked for me. Catholic ways just dominate completely.

Tongues, like faith healing, is crap. Becuse of an old girlfriend I played softball with an Assembly of God church. I had to attend two services a month to stay eligible. I saw the self aggrandizing witnessing, talking in tongues and good old fashion faith healing, first hand. Did I mention it's crap?

Fundamental Christianity, like radical Islam, is a verbal virus. They infect one another; it is a mental disorder.

Now in keeping with my ******* nature I should soften my words by saying something to the akin of this being 'merely my opinion,' but NO! I won't, it's crap.

P.S. Back in 1975 I got thrown out of the same cult that rejected Larry David (Seinfeld). The Church of Bible Understanding (Pentecostal) didn't want me on their office cleaning crew. One night at a sleep-over seminar, when I once agained asked too many questioning questions, several large Christians (they actually had 'muscle' on hand) at 2 AM on a cold winter morning, told me to gather my things and walked me outside, I heard the door lock behind me. I was kind of hurt until two years later, the Jones Town Massacre made we realize I dodged a bullet.

My best friend lost four years of his life to them, cleaning office buildings and then donating his entire paycheck to the 'church.' They housed, clothed, and fed him - he bought Christian fellowship with his paycheck. That they actually gave him. Lots of Jesus and Bible study (and cleaning office buildings.)

I should add that the cult leader WAS NOT A PERVERT. There were no reports of physical or sexual abuse. He just robbed a shlt load of kids for their labor. He wasn't actually paying his laborers so he could under bid all the other cleaning companies. He was operating in several major cities held back only by the limit he could recruit new converts. When the FBI finally shut him down in the early '80s he walked away rich; with no charges levied against him; he had broken no laws.

          A brilliant con!

I used to feel that way, still do in cases like you experienced. Some people make it a positive and for them I respect the traditions. There is abuse in so many human institutions... Religion is one of many.

Holmes had great skills but he didn't always use them to his advantage. He fought with more emotion than someone like Ali and got into some firefights that he didn't need to. The Cooney fight should not have been that difficult for him, but he gave the fans their moneys worth. Foreman could of had a chance at knocking him out based on the history of Holmes fights.

I have his autobio, so I'll double check, but pretty sure he was raised Baptist as most folks were south of the Mason-Dixon in his day.

                    - -Working backwards, George joined an Evangelical Congregation blending Baptist and Pentacostal doctrine after the Young fight.

But not before consulting with Robert Schuller, he of the later Chrystal Cathedral fame.
                    crystal+cathedral+(1).jpg

Schuller was a member of the Reformed Church of America that was the American branch of the Dutch Reformed Church that I assume has it's roots in Martin Luther. He started broadcast as a seminal evangelist at the time George started his boxing career.

Before that, George doesn't mention any religious influences, probably because the sharecropper family was too poor to even buy clothes much less attend a church in rags...

                      - -Ok, thumbing thru my substantial bookmarks, out of the timeline I find his earliest religious reference in the BWAA Fighter of the Year ceremony, where after enduring Ali Tom and N***** insults, he rips the suit jacket off Ali who goes full grrl throwing every piece of crystal she can grab before being escorted away.

George was raised Baptist when they moved to Houston while he was a kid still...
