Larry Holmes, the man

Before I read his autobiography I didn't like Larry Holmes at all. I respected his career and talent, but I didn't think much about him as a person. It went back to his remarks about Rocky Marciano not being able to carry his jockstrap and my own Italian heritage. But after the book and reading more and more about him I found out what an accomplished person he was outside the ring as well as I'm, and what a great family man he is. Stumbled across this article today and it reminded me of all that.

Later on Holmes II let his ego price himself out of a fight with Foreman II. Holmes was never close to Foreman II's popularity (gate appeal) and he deserved nothing close to purse parity with Foreman. Yet Holmes' ego just couldn't abide that and it cost hom a multi-million dollar payday.
I don't believe Holmes ducked anyone out of fear. Champions believe they can beat anyone, it's akin to how they ended up with a belt around their waist to begin with.
Too often posters on this forum only look at what occurred in the ring (records) and what they think SHOULD HAVE HAPPENRD, turning a Nelson eye to the political/social/economic, and timing, nuances that really drives the 'who will fight who' decisions.
Few to no champions ever duck a fight because of fear; they all think they are unbeatable. Holmes believed he was, that's why he traded with Tyson. Becuse he was a true champion.
Bonecrusher Smith wasn't that's why he spent all night grabbing.

Big Lar wanted nothing to do with a Weaver rematch, Witherspoon rematch and a Snipes rematch. Better to fight no risk, low hanging fruit on Network TV like Marvis Frazier, Scott Frank, Evangelista, LeDoux, Cobb, Ocasio ,Leroy Jones, Rodriguez and Zanon. He did make lotsa money fighting low risk tomato cans.Might call it the " 3 Times a Year Tomato Can Tour". He wanted nothing to do with a pre coke Dokes, Witherspoon 2, Weaver 2 or the second incarnation of Big George. Oh he said he did but priced himself out thinking he was a big attraction that he never was. The Cooney fight was his only Superfight and Cooney was the attraction.Comment
