  • Frazier vs Norton Sparring

Short clip of Frazier and Norton sparring in 1971. Which raises the question--who do you think would have won in an actual 12 round fight between the two of them?

I think Norton looks great against him. He does a great job controlling him with the jab. But once Frazier warms up there is more movement and more pressure. So I'm kind of torn here. If Kenny can keep control with the jab he certainly has a great chance at winning. Frazier though...that guy just kept coming. For some reason I think he wears Norton down and stops him around the 14th round in a very close fight.

Norton if he can keep him at arms length but many are called but few are chosen. A war for the ages for sure.

So I go for cfang's "Frazier all day".
Notable: Frazier was known for not giving his sparring partners an easy time. Some of ‘em must have thought, they were in a real fight.

That was my assessment as well. Norton looked good those first 90 seconds using his jab and footwork. I don’t think he could keep Joe at the end of his range for very long. I think Joe gets inside and wears him down.

Norton would have no chance beating prime Frazier. Norton had poor lateral movement and when pressed would find himself with his back to the ropes. Norton’s best power blows were looping but he often punched with open gloves. He does not have the power to hurt Joe. Around rounds 6-8 Norton hooks with the far superior hooker and is nailed. The bout ends soon after. Even fight at that point as it took 4-5 rounds for Frazier to start smoking. Norton takes 3 of the first 4 rounds and Joe takes 3 of the last four rounds.

theres a full clip up on youtube, over an hour of footage. Frazier would beat Norton imo, I don't think Norton has a style that could deal with Frazier. He tries to box and move with him in sparring, not his style. usually a sign hes struggling to deal with him.

I saw the one with Frazier sparring Norton and Jimmy Young I believe. There was also some footage of Jimmy Ellis sparring.
