In addition to the black sparring partners you mentioned, Dempsey also sparred with McVey, Battling Gahee, and even offered Wills a sparring job when he was preparing for the Willard fight. Wills declined.

Sam Langford, when asked how Harry Wills (whom he fought 18 times in his career) would do against Jack Dempsey, said in the June 5, 1922, Atlanta Constitution "Well if he ever fights Dempsey my money will be on the present champion. Dempsey is the greatest fighter I have ever seen. He hits twice as hard as Jim Jeffries and is as fast in the ring as James J. Corbett."
Langford also said that Jack Johnson was the greatest he ever saw, and that Dempsey was afraid of Harry Wills. You shouldn't leave that out.

So what does it all mean? See how this works...one sources says one thing and another says something different, yet you hold onto your sources as if they are the final word and gospel on the subject. Don't recall Langford saying Dempsey was afraid of Wills. When he said Johnson was the best, that was in 1919, when he said Dempsey was the best that was in 1922. Mr. Always Right, is never wrong.

That's because you pull shlt out of your ass.

Did I say my source makes it clear that he prefers one over the other? When did I say that? I simply stated that he also said Jack Johnson was the greatest he ever saw, and that Dempsey was afraid of Wills.

If you don't recall it, maybe you have a poor memory. I'm pretty sure I posted it here before. Don't know what any of that has to do with being always right or wrong.

What did I pull out of my ass? Which part? I stated facts in my post, you got triggered. I'm not concerned with "pretty sure" or any of your hostile comments. I replied to someone else and as usual you came at me with your gotcha nonsense.

Have you researched this or are you just assuming? You say after his retirement, so clearly this was much later. What makes you think that this is only about the first time he was asked to fight Langford? He was asked to fight him several times.

              I'm happy you asked.

You pulled out of your ass that I hold onto my own source like it is the final word. I thought I stated it plainly. I never said my source was the final word. I only mentioned that he also stated Jack Johnson was the greatest he ever saw.

He was asked to fight him early in his career while still relatively green, and then later in his career when Sam was blind in one eye and past it. There was no glory in beating a faded one-eyed Langford.

But I know that quotation wasn't about him being asked to fight him once. It was regarding him being asked to fight Langford multiple times.

And as far as I know, he was asked to fight him once early on (when by the way others at similar stages in their career as Dempsey were fighting Sam) and then later down the line.

I don't know if this is to be taken as you asking for the quotation or not. If you want it, just ask.

He was asked early in Dempsey’s career. Dempsey declines because he hasn’t gained enough experience. It was later that Sam was looking for a paycheck and wanted a Dempsey fight. Langford was past it by the time Dempsey was champion. From 1920 to the year he retired in 1925, Langford lost 15 fights and fought to a draw in 14 of them. He lost 3 of 4 contests to Dempsey’s sparring partner Bill Tate. It was over.
