Wills, while not a great fighter, was decent enough to earn a title fight. Dempsey had certainly fought worse. But more to the point was that certain Tammany politicians owned a significant portion of Mr. Wills.

This is why NY politicians tried to force that fight, they had a piece of Wills and wanted a return on investment. Too bad Wills ducked Tunney for the biggest payday of his life! Lol.
