I suppose it depends if you believe Wyatt Earp or Fitz,the Sharkey camp turned down every single referee that was proposed by the promoter,instead insisting on Earp who had not refereed a major contest before [I'm not sure he had ever been a third man actually].Earp and Sharkey were pally through horses.I think it was a frame up.
Dempsey landed a couple of punches on Sharkey's leg and hip I believe.I think the last shot was border line.Sharkey turned his head to protest to the referee,and said Dempsey hit him when he wasn't looking.
Dempsey's response was ,"well what the hell ,why ain't you looking you should be looking at me ,nor the referee.? " "what was I supposed to do send him a post card?"
It was Dempsey's left hook to the chin that ko'd Sharkey, not any dubious body punch.
Sharkey himself was involved in two low punch verdicts,against Schmeling and Scott.When his manager Johnny Buckley started a rumpus in the ring,Sharkey said," it's all in the game."
