Way too easy to hit. He was lucky that Italians loved boxing at the time, it was number one in sports and he had no competition.

Only idiots who have no fight dvd's (i have 1000+ 500vhs) and haven't seen much would rate 'the rock'. The best of his era were old men, and even then he was getting outboxed by the painfully slow Jersey Joe Walcott (equivalent to a journeyman like glen johnson)just by looking at footage one can see he wouldn't stand a chance aginst a Prime Roy Jones, the old Hopkins or even our Clinton Woods! Never mind any genuine heavyweight. He didn't lose coz he didn't fight anybody. Look at all the best, they lost coz they fought the best. He knew he had to retire early or get ko'd by the up and coming fighters! Smart guy but still rubbish.

I've seen every major boxing match that took place in the past 100 years and every Marciano title fight. Walcott was an old slow man and even then he had to hit the man when he was down because he was being outboxed. Marciano is overrated because he was the white hope in a segragated America where they believed they were evolutionarily superior. Marciano never beat anybody decent in their prime and was lucky he was in a dead era. The truth is he was overrated and would lose to many of todays light heavyweights including Calzaghe Hopkins and maybe even Tarver. People who know boxing know he is not a top ten heavyweight. Don't get upset, it is the truth.

LOL some Marciano advocates believe Joe Louis was not totally over the hill when Marciano fought him!!! He was pulled out of retirment and looked more washed up than the shores of Blackpool. Just because Rocky was crap and made a meal out of him and the other old men he fought doesn't mean they were not washed up. Also he did not fight everyone around at his time and retired early to avoid the likes of Sonny liston, Cleveland Williams etc. Even so, it may not be his fault but still exposed his weaknesses. He struggled with Walcott who was average, slow and ever so OLD. It took a dirty shot and there was never to be a rematch in segregated america that needed their hero so bad. He was so easy to hit it was a joke. Completely outboxed for many rouns. Marciano would lose to David Haye in about 2 rounds.

I think he is not even in the top 20 in the heavyweight division of all time. It pisses me off when people think he was in the top 5 or even the best! ROFL. Why does he always pop up on p4p lists? He was absolutely ****!
i dont agree that rocky couldnt beat clinton woods but i do agree that he is criminally overated.i think for somebody to be called the best of all time, they should be able to beat any1 in that division who ever laced em up.i cannot by any strecth of the imagination see rocky beating, let alone being competitive with guys like liston, ali, holyfield, lewis, holmes, foreman, tyson,bo we etc etc.just to small and limited.he was tough, with a ton of heart but so were alot of other fighters

    • It's ludicrous to physically compare 21st century boxers such as Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye to boxer from the 1940s such as Rocky Marciano.

      Just ludicrous.

Not only has training equipment changed immeasurably in the last seventy years, but what they knew about nutrition in the 1940s cannot even be compared to what our nutritional knowledge of today.

Dude, just the size factor alone is enough to get Marciano KO'd by either of them. For Christ sakes, he was only 185. Comparing Marciano to big heavyweights is just not fair plain and simple. I think its hilarious to here these guys say he would have beat guys like Tyson, Holyfield, and Lewis. No way in hell.

Holyfield used to weigh 177-190 pounds. Anyone who thinks Marciano doesn't stand a chance against David Haye must not have seen too much footage of either man.

Size does not trump skills, will or determination. Heavyweights have gotten bigger, but their skills have deteriorated terribly. On top of that they throw less punches and have lousy stamina. While training equipment and nutrition have changed much, it doesn't really mean that much when you look at the big picture.

Yeah, no way in hell could 6', 208 lb Eddie Chambers win every round against and drop undefeated 6'7", 253 lb Alexander Dimitrenko.

So you're saying that Smokin' Joe would have no chance against Lewis or Klitschko or Haye? Marciano had a better punch than Frazier. Frazier had faster feet than Marciano and put together better combinations.

I think Marciano would be killed by a Foreman or a Tyson but I think that Marciano and Klitschko would be a great fight. Marciano looked clumsy because he had to get inside to be effective. He would have an easier time getting inside on tall, stand-up-straight, lean-back fighters such as Lewis and the Ks than he would with a Joe Louis or an Ali.

As a cruiserweight. He wasn't competing in the heavyweight division at that weight. Holyfield is also 6-2 and Marciano was only 5-10. With that said, Marciano would have beaten Haye IMO.

Holyfield however was not so big of a heavyweight that a fight with Marciano would automatically be a mismatch due to size. Even during his heavyweight career, when he bulked up a lot in weight, Evander came at around 205-210 pounds during his title run. If you put the cruiserweight version of Holyfield against Marciano, there'd be no difference at all between them in size. Thus I don't really understand bringing up Holyfield as an example that the modern heavyweights are too "big" for Marciano. Lewis, the Klitschko brothers and Bowe are understandable, but not Holyfield.
