To be fair mate, he was a good fighter but had four cracks at a title to win one and lost on his first defence.

He was certainly a league higher than most of these on the list though.

I think people are voting Ruiz just because he is boring. But he was no way the worst.

His KO ratio is misleading, He's very dull to watch, his reticence to engage with sitting ducks is frustraing to watch.

Problem here is, if you really believe this, then the careers of some of the greatest fighters in history are null and void in your book. Fighters like Jack Johnson, Jake LaMotta, Willie Pep and many others engaged in "fixed" fights. You would also have to add those opponents they were in against in those fights to that list of questionable fighters since they were involved. I don't condone fixed fights, but I don't think it tarnishes an entire career either.
With Johnson, Lamotta and Pep, you could see the obvious talent. There wasn't much talent obvious with Firpo.

I personally do think fixed fights tarnish your career, especially when the vast majority of your career consists of fights where one guy takes a dive to build up the other's record.

Basically that's it. Most of the "fans" I've talked to have the appalling tendency to equate entertainment value with greatness. The two aren't related, if they were then Arturo Gatti was the greatest p4p ever. Whether they realize it or not I believe there is a subconcious desire for their favorites to be the best and it comes out in their statements. Fighters who provide satisfying KOs consistantly get overrated for instance.

I personally find John Ruiz to be the single most unwatchable fighter on the planet but I'm not going to slap a "worst ever" tag on him because of that. Unwatchable or not the guy won and he beat some good names.

It depends on the context. In Jake LaMotta's case, being told that he either takes a dive or forgets about his title shot, who honestly wouldn't do the same in his position?

Jack Dempsey is another believed by many to have taken a dive against Fireman Jim Flynn. It's easy to be critical, but when you're a penniless fighter hoboing around towns in the midwest, and someone offers to double your purse if you take a dive, what are you going to do?
