People are mistaking someone who is a skilled counter puncher and can make you miss as being defensively sound. It's a part of defense but guys like Pea and Loche made a style out of baiting so they could make you miss, but still got hit. It's certainly a skill to make someone miss as it gives you counter punching oppourtunities. Some of the truly best defensive fighters are a lot more textbook though. Like Hopkins didn't get hit much his entire career until much later, Leonard as well. People go on about Leonard's chin but he barely got hit. Even Duran only touched him a few times, likewise Leonard barely hit him. Just when they connected it was fireworks.

Another consideration is good defense means not getting hit flush. Getting hit by light punches doesn't mean much and may serve the fighter better not to fall for bait. Duran in my book had one of the best defense in the game. Everyone who faced him struggled to hit him clean and he was right in front of them for 15 rounds.

The underlined point is extremely relevant to great defensive fighters.

Barely hit Leonard? Hearns hit Leonard a lot. Enough to close one of Leonard's eyes. I don't know what fight you were watching.

he shut leonards eye with just a few jabs. If Hearns connected on Leonard flush it would have been lights out. He really didnt hit Leonard much because Leonard was moving around so much.
