I just watched the fight again too. I think what Lampley said was that "Roy Jones is a great fighter, and John Ruiz is not. Ruiz is being exposed for exactly what he is: nothing but a paper champion". I agree with the first part, Roy Jones was one of the best fighters of all time, and Ruiz , I'm sorry, was not, and never will be. But I disagree with how Lampley and Merchant totally tore John Ruiz down as he is losing his heavyweight "championship" which he will never get back. Big George did the right thing by coming to Ruiz's defence, there really was no need for them to throw John Ruiz in the garbage during a live telecast, and it showed a lack of class. It downplayed Roy's accomplishment, which I don't care how you slice it, regardless of the alphabet soup, was one hell of an accomplishment. George was also correct when he said "...then all of the titles are paper titles". In my opinion Georgie owned Lampley on live TV, and George was the only one calling a spade a spade. The fact remains: any great fighter can lose to a good bigger fighter on any night. All it takes is one big shot to end it. Roy neutralized Ruiz's offense, and did what he does best.

I just have one question: What the hell fight was Harold Lederman watching? He either had a few stiff cocktails before the fight, or he has absolutely no shame in trying to cheerlead a more marketable fighter for HBO. What a joke.

Right on Baya, I couldn't agree more. The Mayweather ship is sinking and Winky needs to start fighting more, and siding with Mayweather less. I agree with Roldie, Miranda hasn't shown any improvement since his first fight with Ambraham (neither has Abraham really). So he knocked Banks out of the ring with a overhand right bomb. Abraham knows how to avoid that bomb. Abraham lands quick, stiff shots all night, tires Miranda down, frustrated him on the way to a UD.

And Im sure if Calzaghe said "I'll never lose to a black guy" that the black community would just be "relax and chill"...cuz "he didn't mean", he was just hyping the fight. I love Andy Lee. He's everything I wish John Duddy was:a technically sound boxer with power to spare. Just watching him KO Carl Daniels, if you're a boxing purist, was absolute art. Given Carl Daniels was way past his day, watching Andy throw a perfectly timed hook while backing up, starching Daniels and celebrating before the guy even hit the canvas...absolute poetry. That said, Manny does indeed have a habit of cheerleading his fighters somewhat shamelessly. Remember when he blabbed on and on about how Jermain Taylor was just in a different league than Kelly Pavlik? "He just has too much speed, too much natural coordination" he said. Oops. He forgot to mention that Kelly has real power to close the show when his opponent is hurt. Jermain does not. I love Manny Steward, but he's been sucking Andy Lee's dick since he beat his boy in the amateurs. Pavlik KO's him easily right now. End of the year? I say its a decent fight. Lets hope it happens. Pavlik benefits with another defence of his crown, and Lee benefits by tasting the limelight for the first time. That fight launches Lee to stardom and he takes over the MW division after Pavlik moves to SMW.

Michael Lomax - 2KO in 19 fights, Krzystof Bienias - 16KO in 45 fights, Michael Jennings - 17KO in 39 fights...until Kell faces someone that can actually punch I don't think he can say anything about anyone's chin. As the article foreshadows, Arthur Abraham Vs. Pavlik would be something to behold. Although Abraham is somewhat untested, other than the Miranda fight, both guys have wins vs. Miranda and what a battle that would be. But lets not get ahead of ourselves, Pavlik has to take care of business with Jermain. As far as Duddy getting a title shot? I love John Duddy and I have been following him for the past 3 years...but lets be honest, Duddy doesn't belong in there with Pavlik. I'm so sick of De La Hoya making a circus out of boxing. I'm all for making fights into an event, but only if the fight itself is an event. That can't happen when the two participants are just screwing around to try to break PPV records. Someone should set up a boycot so nobody buys this fight again. I love ya Cliff, I read all of your well-written articles and almost always agree with your wisdom. Conversely, I just watched the fight again and I have to disagree with your comment about the 119-109 scorecard. I found it hard to give Eddie more than 2 or 3 rounds (being generous). True, he landed a couple solid shots early in the fight. True he made Povetkin miss, and also blocked many of his shots. But Fast Eddie threw barely more than 100 punches in the entire fight. Povetkin outworked him in every round, and also outlanded him in nearly every round. I'm all for couterpunching, but when a guy does his best Winky Wright impersonation and puts up his guard the entire fight, eating 50 punches per round (even if only 10 of those 50 land), he better throw back like Winky does. He needs more than 10 quick counterpunches if he wants to win a round. Lopez is a judge who is clearly in favor of workrate over 2 or 3 solid punches per round. I say his scorecard is just fine.

Cotto continuing to do what he does best, fighting guys that have no chance to beat him. The only fighters that have a chance against Cotto are Paul Williams and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Paul for his length to keep Cotto away, and Floyd for his pure boxing ability. That said, your comment doesn't really make any sense. I mean the guy was a legit fighter of the year candidate in 07 beating Zab Judah and Sugar Shane. Why you hating on Cotto?

I've been doubting Hopkins skills since he turned 40, and I've been doubting Calzaghe's skills since his surprise win over Left Hook. So for me its a clash of two fighters who continually prove me wrong. I can't pick either fighter because the other will prove me wrong. Calzaghe throws more punches than anyone B-Hop has ever faced. How do you come up with a gameplan against that? If he just tries to neutralize the punchrate, we're in for a lot of running and Bhop still gets outworked in a UD for Calz. If Bhop decides to offset Calzaghes workrate with his own high output, it could be quite a scrap, and Bhop may be able to hurt Calz and possibly get a stoppage... although its unlikely Bhop will be able to throw 500-1000 punches in the fight. Its a pick'em fight for me.

oh, and by the way, cliff rold is ridiculous. it was one thing for him to say andre berto was gonna stop steve forbes, even though forbes had never even been knocked down, in his career......but this guy took the cake when he said pavlik was gonna KO bernard hopkins. i couldn't believe a WRITER, would have the nerves to put that in print.....it's one thing for fans to say it, but a respected journalist should know better.... As a matter of fact, Cliff Rold just happens to be one of the best boxing writers at present. I've often laughed at his predictions, only for them to turn out exactly as he said they would. Just because he missed on a couple calls doesn't make him ridiculous. I beg you to take a look at the dozens of other boxing writers that picked a pavlik UD and even a KO. Furthermore, you picked Mayorga over Mosely, and Cotto over Margarito. Should someone be calling you ridiculous? Its one thing to ridicule someone's boxing predictions (in a sport where one lucky shot can prove everyone wrong) but to pretend you know more than an accomplished, often spot-on boxing journalist is absurd.
