If Calzaghe had remained a SMW then the Super 6 would never have happened. There would have been no point with a dominant fighter at the top of the division.
Of course, he went up to LHW, so maybe both were possible after all.
McIlvanney On Boxing is brilliant, if you don't mind a more scholarly read.

If Jennings had to run from Taka-frigging-loo, then he will need a Ferrari for Cotto!
I think I saw Jennings lose to Young Muttley on ITV in the UK. That's right, THE Young Muttley...
Witter can't draw flies to a cess pit. That is the only reason why the fight isn't going to happen....yet.
I imagine that Hatton will fight Witter eventually, just before he plans to retire.
That gives Junior 1 or 2 more years to try and build interest in the fight or himself.
Touching reunion
I must say how glad I am that Floyd Jr is reunited with his daddy. Everytime I read about Jr, he is always getting into fist-fights (eg. Gatti, Judah, Baldomir etc). Perhaps the reconciliation with his daddy will calm young Floyd down, and maybe he can go and have a long and happy life in perfered career - an IT Support Officer.
Jeff's mother needs to keep her mouth shut.
Rematch against Calzaghe? Ouch. That's tough love right there.
That's the funniest thing I've read on this forum today. Respect!!
Does anyone know how regularly boxers are drug-tested before fights?
Drugs can help athletes train harder and recover faster, so they do not need to be taken just before a fight to be effective.
I bet it is very tempting to take steroid to recover from injuries so that you can make a fight on a certain date.
If Khan wants Freddy Roach to train him for a fight (against anyone) he will need to wait until after Pac-Mayweather.
That may be an unspoken reason for avoiding any fights in early 2010.
Maybe they will pay Maidana off until after a lucrative fight like Hatton or JMM.
Instead of using the mean average for the challenger rankings why not use the median? One challenger with a low/high ranking will have undue effects on the mean ranking when the number of fights is small. Median just picks the middle value from the list of rankings.
The median rankings for each body, using Fitz's article as my source, are:-
IBF 11.5
WBA 11.5
WBC 10.5
WBO 12.0
IBO 31.5
How arrogant to re-arrange this bout to coincide with your 50th promoting anniversary. Kessler and his people have been pushing for this fight, and now they are messing around.
Take home message: Sort it out, people!
Nutritionist is not a protected title in the UK, so Ross Minter could have been working with a complete quack without knowing about it. Does anyone know the names or institutions of the people he consulted? Anyone associated with, or trained by, the Institute of Optimum Nutrition should be avoided, in my opinion.
Seems most likely that he just needed a reason to justify his retirement due to niggling injury.
Junior Witter's big problem is that he draws very small crowds. Even when he boxed near his home town (in Yorkshire, I think) he could not sell the huge amount of tickets that Hatton and Khan have done.
A dangerous fight with little financial reward is a fight that doesn't get made...
Basically, people, this stage of the process is called "N-E-G-O-T-I-A-T-I-O-N".
This fight has more money in it than any 2 other "big" fights. The deal will be done eventually.
No need to get your knickers in a twist.
However, if this can rustle up some genuine bad feeling between the two boxers, then that is a good thing.
The author's scorecard for Clottey: (7 x 10) + (4 x 9) + (1 x 8) = 70 + 36 + 8 = 114
The author's scorecard for Cotto: (5 x 10) + (7 x 9) = 50 + 63 = 113
That is why the author scored it 114-113 to Clottey.
