Vazquez is is a great fighter. his talent isn't in handspeed and power but those aren't the only things that make you good. Vazquez has a great jab, he controls space and has great timing. plus he has awkard movement which isn't easy to do deal with.
he'd be a problem for Broner because of his style. one of the biggest weakness of the philly shell defence is a boxer with a mobile jab. plus Broner has such a wide stance that it limits his mobility. that's why Broner fights guys who just come foward.
Vazquez would make Broner come to him because if he just stood there he'd get turned and popped from the outside. just look at what Ponce de Leon did against Broner with a jab and Vazquez is better than de Leon.
Vazquez's biggest problem is that he doesn't have a style mexicans like so he doesn't have a big following.
This is a great assessment and I have to agree 100%. I am one of the persons who saw Broner losing against Ponce De Leon. There you have the reason why Broner only talks of facing Broner because he knows that with Vazquez Adrian wouldn't look well. As a matter of fact, there is a very high probability that Broner could lost vs. Vazquez and this will be very detrimental not only for Adrien but also for HBO (especially now that Floyd signed with the rival network).
Ricardo Lopez throws combinations very similar to Marquez. Which you would expect since both were trained by Nacho.
Daniel Zaragosa might be another one to take a look at, was his fighting style similar?
Yes, Ricardo Lopez and JMM both trained by Nacho Beristain and both among the best throwing combinations on professional boxing. JMM has been one of the best boxers of Mexico but I am not sure if he has surpassed what JCC Sr. accomplished (record on world title fights and total number of fights going undefeated). Ruben Olivares, Salvador Sanchez and same Ricardo Lopez should also be considered in such a discussion to choose the best ever of Mexico.
...Top Rank doesn't want to pay Chavez Jr $7m for the fight, and Chavez Jr won't take the fight for $3m; meet in the middle at $5m, with Top Rank getting the first opportunity to talk about an extension and the option to match whatever deal Team Chavez is able to suss out on the market....
Jr. not only wants a good purse but more importantly he doesn't want any extension or condition from Arum. He wants to be a free agent and Bob is trying to force him to stay or if Julio leaves he would pay minimum possible delaying the departure (last I heard is that Bob claims he has rights until 2016).
Chaves abused of clinching and later complained that Rios was making this fight dirty (too much holding also brings bodies and heads closer so Diego should be aware of this). I heard that Chaves had the ability to box smart (which was very limited tonight) and that he was a beast with great power (it also didn't show tonight). I think that in terms of big shots Rios was able to wobble Chaves a few times and Brandon was also attacking the body all time. Nobody wanted to see a DQ and I think Chaves was a bigger disappointment than Rios who as always was receiving punches trying to make it a war to please the public.
I find that 'most' people hating on Rios have an agenda and tend to be *****s and Pac haters. Not all of course. Since Rios lost to PAC, these posters try to discredit Rios ...and try to say he's just mediocre competition.
Come on... Chaves was clinching everytime they got close,...he made the fight ugly.
Rios is an honest guy. Eye gouging is a serious offence that has no place in the sport. Reports of a scratched cornea is pretty serious.
Just look at Chaves' behaviour everytime he committed an offence. That was just silly and indirectly proves Chaves was doing some dirty stuff in the clinch.
True. Many picked Chaves for an easy win just because they "hate" Rios. TBH Chaves wasn't half of what they expected to see. And some posters have pointed that Chaves was so hypocrite to pretend he was not doing anything wrong every he was warned or got deducted a point. Chaves pretended he was doing an immaculate fight while Rios has to be an ogre.
I'm lit upset that Rigo would take this route. Someone with his class, having won two gold medals, shouldn't try to win this way. Especially against an already overmatched opponent that he could have taken out whenever he wanted.
Exactly. Rigo doesn't need to follow the shady route. He shouldn't give any ammunition to his detractors.
From the star this fight was a total mismatch. How does the WBO rank a guy who didn't fight anybody with a decent record in his last 5 fights? (the last 2 fights he won 6 round decisions against boxers with records of 0-1-0 and 0-0-0)
Now this ending. Let's be real. The thai guy was still dazed after getting the head butt and the referee could have given more time to recover. It would have been better for Rigo to be the winner after applying a better and more systematic punishment than ending this fight on controversial fashion. Gilberto Ramirez also won on the first round but if threw more punches dropping his opponent 3 times and there was nothing controversial like a head but, not giving proper time to recovery and the borderline sucker punching.
Collazo seems to do well against some southpaw fighters. However, it maybe also be the fact that Ortiz was already done and Sammy is in decline after his loss to Felix D. I guess Collazo next fight will indicate whether he is still a top contender.
..PERSONALLY I felt like he won but my opinion, his opinion and anybody else's don't matter....the judges opinions are the ONLY ones that count....and NONE of the judges had Lamont as the winner
So Manny really lost the first fight against Bradley because the mighty judges opinion is the only one to count? And many other fights too? Why do people express their opinion since it really doesn't matter? In fact, boxing forums don't have any reasons to exist.
Maybe this time Ortiz would try harder but it seems to me that he always will look for easy exits while being in trouble. He already opened the door to acting and it is almost sure that if he fails again in boxing he will immediately would jump again to the "make believe" industry. Although after few months he probably would try one more time in boxing and so on.
No way was this fight even close to a draw. A draw is a robbery for Herrera
Herrera won at least 8 rounds CLEARLY
Herrera had the better offense, defense, volume and ring generalship except for the 11th round which he stood against the ropes but he was blocking all of Danny's punches. He also busted up Garcias face.
Worst fight card maybe ever. Early stoppage, clear fixed fight and blatant robbery. SHO and GBP should be banned from boxing
My exact thoughts.
GGG is the real King of MW. Cotto should face him if he wants to claim the linear championship but I am afraid Miguel probably would end fighting Bradley or some other blown up WW.
Well I'm talking Canelo fans. You guys, maybe not you specifically, were celebrating when this fight was announced like Canelo had won something by actually fighting a good fight.
Ir really should be a celebration for all boxing fans to see fights where 2 champs want to unify titles. Last week it was Donaire and Rigo and this week is 2 young undefeated fighters both with room to still improve their game. This is to me a reason to rejoice because I was getting tired of the "pseudo" stardom of some boxers and all the promoters/TV junk of overprotecting them or not willing to split credits and earnings.
I like this fight and I hope this Linares doen't come with excuses as most mexicans do when have to face cubans. I only want to point out how the strategic of Mickey Garcia resulted. He waited a lot until someone defeat Gamboa a reléase him the preassure to fight with him. This is what Leo Santa Cruz is doing with Rigo, just loosing time and pray for someone defeat Rigo and he doen't have to fight. How cowards are they
Linares is from Venezuela but he has resided in Japan for long time. This post shows that Cuban fans are very limited in knowledge of pro boxing. Except one or two Cuban guys who didn't continue with their love for amateurism, the rest seems to be just following their compatriots who fled from the Island (and maybe Floyd or another slick fighter) and that is why they can't be appreciative of offensive type of fighters and keep thinking that the their Olympics success is synonym of professional supremacy.
didn't bomba gonzalez just fought on the donaire undercard?
or this is another jonathan gonzalez?
Anyway I'm gonna watch, mijares-terrazas seems like an intriguing match up
They got the record of Francisco Marro Perez wrong. This mex boxer is only 18 years old, ranked # 182 in the division and his real record is 7-2-1 with 5 KO's instead of what they published in this article (10-2-0 5 KO's). I guess the managers are padding the record of Glez. but they need to make it appear more important than it really is.
I was scrolling down...saw this thread title and bust out LMFAO ....Karass is a tough dude....one of the REAL tough guys of the sport....but IMO Devon should get by him.....it will be entertaining though
True. JSK is a real warrior and although he is limited there is no doubt that he compensates with a lot of energy and a very big heart. Alexander can move and if he boxes during the whole fight he should be the victor but I am sure that Soto Karass is going to aim to destroy Devon and this is the recipe for a very entertaining fight.
I remember 2 or 3 instances where boxers over-trained and ended losing early in their fights, so rather than being beneficial all the intense preparation could have the opposite effect. I hope is not the case with Alvarez because I believe that the world of boxing deserves a competitive and epic fight specially after the big disappointment caused by Mayweather-Pacquiao since a lot of people expected more action and excitement than what it was really provided on May 2nd 2015.
This is bad news for those hating Canelo and/or Junior. GGG is still away from a sell out of his fight. Recently, diva cotto ended cancelling his PPV fight supposedly for an injury of Kirkland (although same diva cotto was doubtful of it) likely meaning that the demand for the fight was very poor. Maybe Pacquiao gets better numbers and that would bring some comfort to those fans hating Alvarez or Julio.
Without substantial evidence, the 'loaded wraps' theory is just a cheap excuse. Among the principles of justice exists the Legal Burden of Proof. To speculate, assume, deduce, conjecture, infer, suspect, and/or theorize without proof or irrefutable evidence is just a futile exercise. If that was the case (validated or demonstrated facts for the specific fight Cotto-Margo beyond reasonable doubt against the Mexican fighter) then it would have been possible to change the result of that fight to a No Contest. However, Athletic Commissions can't operate on suppositions or hypothesis like some posters do, who by the way behave like authentic sore losers.
He had a good career, he beat johnny gonzalez..
He was a real warrior and gave us very entertaining fights. IMO he actually defeated Broner even when he had to climb to an upper division. However, the last 2 loses by KO is a clear indication that his best years are gone and I really applaud his decision to retire now. I think he is already a commentator for ESPN FNF in Spanish. Thanks for the good moments and good luck!
Campbell, arnaoutis, holt wernt bums when garcia fought them....he has 9 notable names on his resume...theophane, arnaoutis,campbell,holt,morales,khan,judah,mathysse,herrera..and possibly peterson next the dude has a very good resume..imo
This is the problem when people only look at names but not the whole picture. Of the list, Campbell, Holt, Judah and Morales were not on their prime anymore. Theophane was a very close fight (SD) and a good number of people thought Garcia lost. Herrera (who was supposed to be a "homecoming" tune-up fight) was the real winner and I accept that Khan and Mathysse are the most important wins of Garcia so far. There are other 140 # fighters that he could face such as Postol, Provodnikov, Broner, in lieu of Salka (he could also rematch Herrera to show that it was only a bad night). If Garcia is so great then there is no way to justify any type of mismatches or easy fights and his followers should be always demanding the best of his favorite boxer.
I guess this guy Dulorme has problems to get under 140 Lbs. but he is afraid to compete in the 147 and all of the sudden a new limit for the junior welters has emerged (144 Lbs) and all of that is in addition to continue fighting bums that help him to pad his record and hopefully the WBO could get him a title fight soon.

The commissioner "instructing" the judges and later himself changing the round voting. As well as the referee, after Lopez was down, applying the count when the local fighter was seating (by rule in many places the bell doesn't save a boxer)!! Regarding judges: when was the last time someone without ties with P. Rico won a decision there? Mauricio Herrera like many other was deprived of a victory because home decisions are gifted every time in the island).
It almost feels like a bad thing because it's 4.4 million people who paid for a garbage fight and are less likely to do it again. I hope the Canelo fight helped half those folks find faith in boxing again.
Absolutely true. Many people, including myself, expected more of the May 2nd card. The supporting fights were less than average and Floyd-Manny was a big deception. The expensive price wasn't justified. Luckily, there was a much better fight (more exciting and with more action) on May 9th and the best thing is that it didn't cost me additional money. It is always rewarding to feel that someone delivers a good service in exchange of your money (in case of Alvarez and Kirkland it goes with the price paid for been an HBO subscriber).
And now, I can see a problem with the voracity of promoters and TV networks: the bar has been raised in terms of PPV cost and they know that fans would end accepting paying more no matter how good or bad a boxing event could be.
If you think Cotto won the fight, thwn you're an ídiot. Complain about the scorecards all you want, but the right man won.
I agree 100 percent. But it is only few who are in denial and the next few days they will look for all kind of excuses. The true is that cotto last 3 victories were against diminished rivals and today fought a guy without knee problems or drained 3 pounds or being old. There were no advantages for cotto and that is why he clearly lost.
Let's be honest, who wants to see this version of Morales fight any of the top 10 guys, I sure as hell don't. They're actually doing him a favor and in turn doing us a favor.
It has been clear that this version of Erik was only a shadow of his glorious past. Returning after four years and forced to fight 2-3 divisions above his peak wasn't a good idea. Despite being very past his prime, Erik still had a very competitive fight vs. Maidana and won a title in a 4th division (against a young Cano), but let's not forget that after having some surgery Erik lost that belt one day before to his first fight vs. Garcia. Erik was able to make that first fight vs. Garcia competitive but looked horrible in the second fight realizing finally that he should have remained retired. This USADA ban is really irrelevant to future plans (the farewell fight in Tijuana) as well as his future induction to the HOF. I just hope that USADA applies the same criteria in future cases. I also expect to see fines and suspensions of commissions similar to the ones given to Chavez Jr. Rule enforcement should be the same beyond nationalities or ethnic backgrounds.
So it's not the guy boxrec has listed?
http://boxrec.com/boxer/429227
Checking lists of active boxers and their records, there is nobody else whose name comes close and with a 42-2 record and much less if it is a Mexican. So, looks like somebody made up the lie to try to justify the lackluster type of performance.
Morales is a first ballot HOF. His best days were when Erik had titles at 118, 122 & 126 Lbs. I believe that he actually won the title at 130 Lbs defeating David Diaz but, as it happens with Herrera vs Garcia, the local fighter receive the home gift decision. Erik went into retirement but after almost 5 years he decided to come back and this time campaigning at 140 Lbs. which was really 7th division above where started fighting. I could have been nice to see him face JMM but that fight never came to fruition. He should have remained retired because his best days were gone more than a decade ago.
I don't think that anybody can say that Beltran or Mtz won clearly and nobody can claim it was a robbery. It was a very close fight and it could have gone either way by one point (5 points as one judge had it doesn't seem right). Beltran connected the most solid blows rocking Mtz few times but Roman kept busier. Myself had it one point ahead for Beltran but it depends on how one scores round 11 when Beltran was deducted a point after being warned (10-8 or 9-9). I scored 9-9 so got Beltran by one point but if it were a 10-8 then a draw would be the final result. And I think that scoring the fight even would be fair forcing a rematch between both. The point deducted was the difference at the end since as I said on the minds of some judges could have swung not only one but two points against Beltran. Originally this fight was going to be in the WV2-Marquez card and it wasn't for any vacant title. Neither Beltran or Mtz were among the top 5 of the division in the list of the WBO few weeks ago but strangely this fight was upgrade bypassing people who were higher. I think a rematch would be fair.
Why some people are biased and can't see the whole picture? If somebody is going to complain about low blows then Moreno was also hitting Mares consistently below the waist (in fact both were very even in that as you could appreciate replaying the fight without being biased). How many of those blow of both boxers were intentional is difficult to say. Mares was pursuing and attacking relentlessly Moreno and the Panama native many times was using his hands and arms to put Mares' head down (that also contributes to get low blows). The referee warned Chemo few times and finally in the 11th round a point was deducted to Moreno for continuing doing it. In the knock down, there was certainly a punch and I believed that Chemo tried to hug the lower body of Mares but all his momentum couldn't avoid the fall. Mares won beyond the KD and point deduction on the basis of punch volume (total punches) and power punches. Abner was more active, has the determination and hunger to win although I would never agree with the *stupid* score of 120-106 but I would say to the whiners and haters to stop crying.
