Was Michael Spinks really the greatest Light Heavyweight of all time?
What did he do that made him get known as that?
hell, no he wasn't. archie moore was damn near 50 and he was destroying every single lighthw that challenged for his title. charles friggin' killed someone in the ring. no way spinks compares to those two.
i can't believe this!
why is this even a thread? why would someone dare put marciano against the likes of liston? liston was a monster and had amazing boxing skills. he had a pile driver jab that was lightning fast. liston would dismantle the brockton bumb in one round, plain and simple. if the quick and elusive patterson couldn't make liston miss, what makes you think marciano could, plus patterson is bigger than marciano. marciano never fought someone as terrifying as liston and he would'nt know what to do with him. plus this is a horrible style match-up ala frazier-foreman, only much worse, cause marciano isn't half the boxer frazier is and liston, although he doesn't punch as hard as foreman, hits way faster, and so the fight would last about 2 minutes. marciano hits the canvas many times, and stays down the fourth time, and that is the end of the story.
.....When it's all said and done, Wlad will go down as the best. Once he unifies and rules for 5-6 years nobody will be able to deny him his place. At least I hope that's how it goes down. :)
Nah, I ve seen him fight, and I still would say that Dempsey would chop him down. Dempsey has better handspeed, power and chin, plus he was an extremely fast starter.
Jack Dempsey ko5 Wladimir Klitchko.
As for who was more vicious, I would say they were cut from the same cloth. Hardworking gentlemen outside of the ring, but brutal and lethal inside.
I don't know. Marciano would knock out his opponents in minutes. Dempsey would do it in seconds! I would say Dempsey is more vicious.
Here's a picture of Dempsey Sparring with Bill Tate. As you can see, even his facial expression shows that he was a crazed maniac in the ring, and that he had pure killer instinct.

However, Marciano against Roland LaStarza has a serious look, but it doesn't look half as mean as Dempsey's expression.

So as you can see, Dempsey is the more ferocious fighter, since Marciano just wants to knock you out, while Dempsey wants to kill you!
Enough said.:boxing:
i don't usually agree with butterfly when we talk about white heavyweights but hes right on the button
dempsey had more killer instinct than marciano infactthe only boxer who may have had more killer instinct was mike tyson.
marciano fought at a far more measured pace much like frazier this meant he had fewer first round knockouts but he had the highest KO percentage of any heavyweight champ
dempsey is the best (i can't believe the fisrt few pages went without a mention!) marciano is second then you have bonavena quarry gene tunney tommy morrison may deserve a mention too
The only reason one would have to rank Marciano above Dempsey is because he retired undefeated. Other than that, there nothing you can say about Rocky that Dempsey wasn't better at.
Gotta go with the rock on this one.
Marciano. Easily. I really like Klitschko as well though. He needs to prove himself a bit though before he really enters into greatness.
Did someone forget
Rocky Marciano!!!!!!
There's no argument here at all. Marciano by a mile. He was one of the best eva, not just white. Thread officially closed!
Without doubt the greatest white heavyweight boxer of all time is Rocky "The Brockton BlockBuster" Marciano.
Need I show more proof that Rocky Marciano is extremely overrated?:nonono:
I gotta tell ya,im still not convinced because of facial expressions in a couple of pictures:boxing:
Plus if you look closely, Marciano is in the act of throwing a punch, and he still doesn't look mean, and usually fighter squint their faces as a reflex when throwing a punch. But Dempsey is looking mean just standing there without throwing punches. Imagine if Marciano was not throwing a punch or Dempsey was throwing a punch. Sorry mass Pride, but Dempsey is more vicious.
need i search all over boxing scene to find proof of your overwhelming bias against marciano?
marciano was a great boxer i think the oucome of a fight between him and wlad will be decided by hoe wlad takes body shots
I'm not talking about Wlad, I'm talking about Dempsey.
WTF? This is the furthest thing from the truth. Dempsey was actually far more dapper and successful in blending in with upper class society than Marciano ever was. Dempsey had friends in the entertainment industry, athletes, other fighters, and even intellectuals and writers. If Dempsey were "an animal" or "morally corrupt" he would not have such friends. He would also not have turned down Al Capone's offer to fix the 2nd Tunney fight like he did. Dempsey was disliked early on because he was considered a draft dodger but he was known to be very charismatic and likeable in the mid and late 1920's. The women especially lusted after Dempsey. Why do you think he was a movie and serial star? The men wanted to be him and the women just plain wanted him. Marciano never enjoyed such popularity.
As for who was more vicious, I would say they were cut from the same cloth. Hardworking gentlemen outside of the ring, but brutal and lethal inside.
Some of you guys have no clue about these men, in the ring or out.
Great post. Dempsey was a real gentleman outside the ring, and one of the three most popular boxers of all-time(Ali and Tyson). Good k coming.
Gene Tunney was interviewed once and tunney said that when he fought Dempsey, he had the feeling that Dempsey wanted to kill him, and he never felt that way against any other opponent according to Tunney.
Definetly Marciano! The only heavyweights I rank above him are Louis,Ali,Johnson, and possibly Foreman.
Dempsey was better. He was faster. He was a better puncher. He was more smooth in his movement. He could get in and out of range in a hurry. He had a long reach to keep opponents away. He had a better defense, and he had a better killer instinct.
Why is everyone saying Marciano? Other than his perfect record I don't see how you can say that he was the greatest white heavyweight. Jack Dempsey was the greatest. He had the most killer instint of probably any boxer in history. He also had more 1st round knockouts than any belt holder of any weight class in boxing history. He was the pioneer of the bob-and-weave and did it to perfection. In the Caucasian race, Jack Dempsey is in a class by himself. There's Jack Dempsey, and then there's the top ten.

He never really fought any outstanding punchers, but Louis still had a lot of sting in his punches and Jersey Joe wasn't exactly featherfisted. He tended to get himself into a lot of wars too, and survived them all. But it could be said that it was his heart and courage pulling him through then and not his chin. It's all down to opinion and 'what if's' to be honest.
Marciano didn't fight antybody that took his opponents out as quickly as dempsey did. Actually, I can't think of anyone besides Tyson who could knock his opponents out quicker than Jack Dempsey did. Marciano's plan was to weather the storm and go to the later rounds because of his superior stamina. Louis wasn't someone who went after his opponent and tried to take them out early. Walcott is an overrated puncher and his power is not in the class of Dempsey by any means. Marciano is very vulnerable in the early rounds, and that's when Dempsey is the most dangerous. Dempsey would really put a hurt on Marciano.
Dempsey in 4.
That's your opinion.Although I agree with most of it except for the killer instinct part.None the less I still rank Marciano over Dempsey whether or not Jack was more skilled. If I was ranking purely on skill than Marciano would not be near the top of my list. His heart, chin, power, and yes killer instinct was what made him great.
Dempsey has more of a killer instinct, and the films show it. Dempsey has more first round knockouts of any champion in any weight class in the history of boxing. How many first round ko's does marciano have? Dempsey would stand over opponents and hammer away not caring anything about his opponent. I've never seen Marciano look that ferocious in any of his fights.
Dempsey > Marciano > The rest of the white heavyweights.
If this fight ever happened, I doubt that the Manassa mauler would KO Rocky. His chin was made out of cast iron.
I feel it would be stopped on cuts in the later rounds, with Dempsey winning, or Dempsey would win by UD.
Dempsey was a fast starter. Marciano a notoriously slow starter, plus he was rocked and dropped by Walcott and Moore, that equates to Dempsey jumpimg all over him early in the fight and getting the job done quick.
