Is that a fact or theory? Wouldn't mental health issues more likely led to them not performing at a high level to be able to compete or having issues beyond the sport & therefore being out earlier?
Granted in boxing thats not valid since you have the ability to fight guys well beneath you skills-wise so as long as you don't fall off the treadmill you can get a boxing license.
It's for a whole variety of reasons.
Most sports people live such structured lives that once they loose that structure they really struggle. Also often that structure removes them from friends and family for long periods of time so they don't have the relationships once they retire. Most also miss competing and being the centre of attention.
Also I think quite a few top level sports people would be considered manic and another to get where they are.
LOL. Idk how people keep saying that casually & without thinking.
Ray Mercer who had 20 years of boxing experience got his quickest KO in combat sports in a MMA bout (9 seconds) at 40 something. And I'd argue it was because of those lil ass gloves. You put Paulie M in 4oz gloves & I bet he'd even have a 50% KO percentage.
That being the case common sense would suggest putting on double the cushion gloves is gonna have some change in power. How much or how little is up for debate, but its lowering it for sure.
Im not stalking honest ;o)
George Groves made an interesting point, that he does have great power and part of the reason is he hits from such distance dues to MMA and has everything behind his punches.
He did go on to say that any boxer with good reading and movement would avoid such shots all day long.
Whether or not you like Groves he does talk a lot of sense when being objective.
I don't know about 2015. That is a risky statement to make since fighters of 2010's is so horrible.
The 3rd best Heavyweight right now is probably Alexander Povetkin still. Behind Joshua and Fury.
Are you saying Alexander Povetkin can beat the 3rd best Heavyweight of the 70's? Either Foreman or Frazier?
What about
Fury vs Ali
What about
Dereck Chisora vs Larry Holmes?
The 90's-late 2000's modern guys will possibly beat the 70's though but will be close.
You might find exceptions but as a generalisation, modern era will beat historical. You'll always get people who like to harp back to the good old days.
Your example puts a multiple time WC who reigned for a period of time up against someone who won a WT and never defend, and a WC against a contender in modern day.
I'd have Ali as the greatest HW of all time that doesn't mean I think he'd beat every heavyweight.
Yea I don't get that either. I think that among this tight knit fanbase boxing as there are bound to be back n forth supporting this guy or hating on that guy. Once a guy reaches beyond a certain mainstream level though I think you should be showing that guy a certain amount of respect & appreciation as a guy who's representing our chosen favored sport to the masses who know little or nothing about boxing.
Boxing fans are elite level b^tchers & moaners doe.
I think it depends a lot on when AJ gets KO'd (it will happen, double handed push offs stick his chin in the air)
and how he comes back from that.
I don't mind him and fair play to him I think he is making the most of what he has. He seems extremely dedicated which is very admirable. I don't always agree with the mantra of him being this great role model.
He kids you can make millions just like him, by getting punched in the head. Pretty sad if that's all some have of escaping poverty in one of the richest country's in the world.
Terence Crawford vs Wilfred Benietez
Keith Thurman vs Sugar Ray Robinson
Errol Spence Jr vs Sugar Ray Leonard
Gennady Golovkin vs Marvin Hagler
Vasyl Lomachencko vs Willie Pep
Andre Ward vs Monzon
Shawn Porter vs Forrest
Manny Pacquiao vs Roberto Duran
Floyd vs Pernell Whitaker
Deontay Wilder vs George Foreman
Anthony Joshua vs Lewis
Since boxers have got better over time does this mean that the old school boxers wouldn't stand a chance against today's technicians and power punchers?
Almost every modern boxer would beat the older ones on a now vs then basis.
If the older ones were given the same levels of training and nutrition now practised the ones with more natural skills would win most obvious would be Lewis would beat AJ and this is one of the closer gaps in terms of years
I often don't really grasp why guys stay so long in this rough ass, dangerous sport when they've made completely insane money vs what their income expectations were without boxing. I guess they just don't plan for the future very well or simply want more despite the obvious trade off guys make with their long term & immediate health for money in this game.
I think it's very little to do with money, you only have to look down the ranks at those who get so little, they are doing it for other reasons.
Ex pro sports people have some of the worst mental health issues going, whilst money can be a contributing factor its not usually the main one.
No doubt. I've been impressed with his improvements before the Klitschko fight & the Klitschko fight itself just showed the heart & drive he has to push his physical boundaries to the point he did which you can only be in awe of its such an intangible trait of fighters who get talked about well past their last fight.
Rightly or wrongly people look up to athletes & just like everyone can't be a professional athlete not everyone can be or even wants to be a doctor, lawyer or accountant either. But mainly thats a problem, if you even wanna call it that & I wouldn't, that goes well beyond Joshua.
Mainly with stuff like this in boxing or anything I think the takeaway is & certainly should be that if you put in the hard work & dedication towards your goal, whatever it happens to be, you can achieve it. Its a thing people like to see & I'd even argue need to see cuz it reinforces the lesson that whatever position you are in today you can attain great things if you apply yourself fully into something.
Do you think he is likely to get KO'd? I don't mean this in a haters way. It's meant genuinely..
As for your second response I agree to an extent but feel this is one of those selective biased fallacies which actually doesn't help society. The notion that if you haven't made it it's because you aren't trying doesn't add up for me.
Getting a bit deep here now ;o)
Like I say all credit to him make as much money as you can as with anything in life, you never know what's round the corner.
Is that real mental illness doe? That seems like a natural progression many of us have with trajectories in our lives at various times that have exit points, planned or unplanned, from school to clubs/sports to close friends to retiring from your regular job at 65 or whatever age people retire at.
This is legit I'd agree. I often talk about elite level fighters needing to be a lil delusional to believe they can even get where they got. I think that translates into a lot of highly competitive careers doe & one could argue its just some absolute or outlier level of confidence in ones self or drive to succeed rather than some mental illness. But mainly idk if its for sure a mental illness, although I can see your side too.
Well mental illness is "a condition which causes serious disorder in a person's behaviour or thinking." Measured by deviation from the norm. So culturally this can change. I think many of us suffer such episodes but sports people do seem very prone. There has been reasearch in to cricketers recently, the lifestyle salary (relatively low before IPL) etc are all factors. Also jockeys with similarities to boxing.
Boxing, Fury seems to be a classic manic.
Most to get to elite level also have to be pretty compulsive types add to that dieting it's a bad combination.
Does Groves reallllllllly have "great power"? I'd argue most of his KO's are to low level guys that most guys at his skill level + with fair power would KO & he usually goes the distance vs the quality guys to the top ten guys.
The last one was impressive, but I think Fedor mainly had a bad fight plan with lil defense being used more than Groves Foreman'd him or something.
Interesting idea I guess, but I mainly think the gloves being 4oz is whats really in play along with the reality that in MMA defense isn't barely even a thing due to the gloves not offering much safety/guard since they are so much smaller along with MMA scoring not considering defense at all in its scoring criteria.
Apologies, Groves was suggesting McG's power was legit not his own...
I really doubt Robert Guerrero would beat Prime Thomas Hearns, or Victor Ortiz beating Prime Roberto Duran.
Just look at other sports, WR's have been dropping consistently and by sizeable amounts.
I'm not suggesting the modern boxers are like for like better but a 2015 against a 1970 fighter there is only one winner modern sport is so much more advance.
Wilder is still firm on the 7 million he wants. He priced himself out because he thinks he deserves more than what Charles Martin got for fighting in the UK.
But the difference is Martin fought AJ who's the UK's biggest star.. Wilder is fighting Whyte! Is Wilder going to expect 7 million to fight anyone in the UK?. Plain and simple.. He's ducking Whyte and priced himself out.
How much would Whyte be getting!?!
Think he might be pricing himself out to try get AJ?
This is the fastest route to AJ yet he won't do it for a career high pay day ! Instead Parker will jump ahead of him when he beats Whyte.
It's a lot of money but Whyte would pose a threat. Think Whyte is more dangerous than Parker personally. Undoubtedly it would make the AJ fight bigger.
Rematch aside who makes AJ more money than Wilder?
Or does the B side make no difference to what AJ would take home now...?
There is NO fastest route to Joshua ,HE has other fights that HAVE to happen first . A Wilder vs Whyte fight would just be to boost Wilder popularity up if he should win (in a fight that he COULD lose despite what most WISH to believe )
Really Wilder doesn't want the fight bc he knows himself it will be the first live threat hes facing other than 18 fight novice Washington who is not ring savvy Whyte .
Exactly. It's heavyweight boxing.
Whyte will be getting 1.5 mill tops. Hearn is using him as a sacrificial lamb to promote Wilder to the UK market and to get buzz around AJ vs Wilder. Loads of people want to see AJ vs Whyte rematch.. If Wilder beats Whyte they'll all be asking for AJ vs Wilder.. If Whyte beats Wilder then he becomes a title holder and AJ vs Whyte rematch becomes a huge unification. Win win situation for Eddie Hearn.
For sure.
Isn't that why Wilder will want more incase he loses.
His view is surely win or lose he will make Hearn money...
If I was Hearn i'd try a kinda two tiered deal, with stipulation of what he would get if Wilder beats Whyte for the AJ fight.
It's literally the fastest route to AJ. Even faster than beating Parker. He beats white in front of 10s of thousands, gets UK exposure, makes 5 ****ING MILLION DOLLARS, and sets himself up for AJ next year. Where I'd the negative in this?
This is very true!
He seems to be blaming everyone for himself for testing dirty.
Don't they all, mind you people still seem to hate on those who take ownership even if they took it unknowingly.
No division seems harder to match make.
Wilder wants the Joshua fight $$
Whyte wants the Wilder $$
Hearn wants the Whyte vs Wilder then Wilder vs Joshua $$
Joshua doesn't want to get KTFO and keep printing $$
I think AJ is doing all the right things and giving himself the best possible grounding to make a run as/ to champ.
Of course as others have said the best made plans can go AWOL in the heavies but he seems to know where he is and what he needs to do.
Don't see him chatting rubbish etc.
And there lies his cross over appeal.if he can make it he will make it big.
The thing I don't get is why couldn't this have been made public and not the uncle thing or both at the same time.
He has had a load of crap slung at him mainly because of how much he talks.
All of which could have been avoided
I could do with a few million quid I'll throw my hat in the ring.
In fact it'd be on the preferred list of things to do for a few million.
He'll I'll even fly to Vegas.
I'm currently 0-0-0.
Some might say a bit of an unknown quantity, low risk fight though.
I weigh around 12 stone (168) by January I could be in some sort of shape.
One stipulation he isn't allowed to throw that punch that did groves.
Khan is as dangerous as he is beatable in my opinion.
Khan should get a title ;-) make himself relevant.
I personally don't like Khan out the ring.
But seriously could be a good series.
I'd definite rely emotionally hedge!!!
Some of the responses here are ridiculous.
The notion that a major event / corporation is holding a competition instead of contracting someone to do the work is the real issue.
Some often have the audacity to charge an entry fee on the back of such approaches.
To those who say it'd be great if he won he'd get loads of publicity, what so more people can ask him to enter their competition!? Prizes are great but they don't put a roof over your head and that's the bottom line.
He should have just declined the offer like a gentleman. Showtime emailed him with all respect and he should be glad hes even getting considered for that art thing. Respect begets respect. He was like a girl for even posting it. I would understand the business side that he wants but that was just disrespectful. Now what? Does it make him feel better now that he posted it?
I think the reason he shared it and it's gone viral is to highlight the issue of companies trying to exploit artists.
Like others have said it's borderline insulting
controversial fight last night, 3 judges way off, here is how the media scored the fight along with my full card.
http://www.boxingnewsonline.net/arthur-abrahams-wide-points-win-over-paul-smith-puzzles-boxing-media/
comments welcome and how did you score the fight??
what do you think should and will happen to the judges??
Have you run any stats on the data you have been collecting?
Is this a research project?
he has a lot left to prove. when your best wins are byrd, haye, and povetkin you probably should stick around and fight some new talent. also do it without holding 186 times.
So who do you think is the best heavyweight currently? Wilder?
